Tent/Tipi, sleeping bag/quilt, sleeping pad, etc.

Don’t want to break the bank but do not want to buy crap gear. Mostly early season archery hunts with maybe some late season Mulie/Coues deer hunts. Any recommendations?

Just you or you and a buddy? I love my sawtooth, even solo, but have a megatarp to save a little weight, but typically grab the sawtooth for the added comfort of being able to stand. When it is warmer, I use my hammock set up. I have also just added a BA 3 wire bivy to my choices which I may use as a stand alone when moving around a bunch (hunting a totally new area). If you want a nice single person shelter that you can get at a great price find a Mountain Smith LT.

I use EE quilts (I have a 30 and a 0) depending on the temps. Use Exped pads.

Two people tops. Appreciate the feed back!

The only budget friendly sleep item I have is the aforementioned mountain shelter lt. Love it. Perfect for 1, good for me and the wife. Just barely enough room to sleep with me and my full sized hunting partner. Both over 6’ and we had gear piled at our feet and heads to make it work. Work it did however. Wouldn’t want to spend a rainy day in it with him though. To use it you’ll have to add trekking poles to your gear list.

Need to accommodate a stove?

Tent/tipi
No stove with an inner, tarptent stratospire 2
Floorless without inner and possible stove, MLD supermid or seek outside cimarron or LBO

Sleeping bag (quilts = getting cold for me)
Budget, REI magma
No budget, western mountaineering versalite or alpinlite

Pad
Budget, something from klymit with necessary r value
No budget, xtherm (xlite if only going to mid 20s)

Last year this is what I took

Mountainsmith Mountain Shelter LT 32oz picked up for 80 on amazon

Klymit stat v pad 15 oz $44 on eBay pretty much always

Klymit x pillow 2oz $20 on eBay

Kelty tuck 22 bag 3lbs 4oz $89 on amazon

That around 6.3 lbs (weights are off memory may be a few ozs off) and around $230. Everything preformed well. Love the shelter I’ll run it for a while. Pad was good but I picked up the luxe version which is wider and inside sleep, but I got it for the same price. The pillow was good but trying a different one just to try it. The bag is a lot of bang for your buck. A 3lb “22degree” synthetic bag for 90 bucks is pretty good I think. I slept in my under wear down to 30 but I sleep hot. The zipper does get snagged a lot. I’m gonna make a major upgrade to my bag soon. But since last year was my first trip and I had a lot of stuff to buy plus a non res tag and a lot of gas I had to pick and choose what I invested the most in. But if I wasn’t able to upgrade or change anything I wouldn’t bat an eye and have confidence in all of these things.

I just put together my sleep system on a budget. If you're ok with used equipment, you can knock out a super light setup for not much dough. I'm using a Luxe Hexpeak tipi (23oz) Mountain Hardware Phantom Spark 28 bag (22oz) Tyvek ground sheet (~3oz) Ruta Locura carbon stakes (2.5oz) and a Thermarest Zlite pad (14oz). I may try to pickup a lighter pad, possibly a Neoair xlite or a Klymit ultralight (around 12oz). All in I spent just over $250 not including the zlite pad since i had that already. Adding a new pad I'll be under $300, and just under 4lbs. This setup should keep me comfortable down into the 20's, and has the capacity to be able to add a stove in the future.

Did you pick all that up in the classifieds?

No, the tent was from the classfieds, the sleeping bag was from ebay. Those are the expensive items in a sleep system. The rest I bought new from directly from the manufacturers.

How do you like that luxe tipi?

I like it. It's well built and a much economical options that Seek Outside or Kifaru. As good quality? Probably not but it's a good option if you're just trying to figure out what you want. I think if I could do it over again I'd get the XL version. A little taller, a little bigger and not much more weight.

Great info!

Basically copied this system for first time western hunt. Used coupon on moose jaw and got kelty tuck 20 which is slightly warmer for 76. Also weighs 7 oz more though.

Only difference I noticed is pad. Did you go uninsulated? Bc insulated pad says 25oz.

Went with insulated Klymit pad for 45 off eBay with warranty which gave me 25% off coupon which I’m using on pillow.

Puts entire sleep system at around 145 for first hunt.

Tested my kelty bag on a few colder spring nights here in MI without issue but I sleep hot.

Will be testing entire system in two weeks.

Only difference with mine compared to post I modeled it from is my bag and pad weigh about 1lb more.

My setup isn't for everyone but it works for me and it is fast to set up, lightweight, warm and cheap. Thermarest Z-Lite pad, cut down to what works for me ~8oz, military issue gore-tex bivy ~2lbs, Cabelas XPG 15 degree down bag 2 lbs 9oz (this is what the packaging states, my scale says 1 lb 14oz), a cheap 5'x7' tarp ~10oz (soon to be replaced with Seek Outside Gunnison).

I can rip my bivy out and be in my bag in a minute or two. If the weather is bad I put the tarp over my head so I'm not stuck inside the bivy and to keep my gear dry. I don't need to find a place to setup a tent. If things got bad quick I could set my pack down and get in the bivy, seal it up and wait it out. The bivy doubles as a dry bag inside my pack. There are so many positives for me.

I used to use the Klymit Inertia X Wave. I put a hole in it on the past 2 hunts. That is why I switched to a foam pad.

The sleep system that I most commonly use consists of a Locus Gear 2 person Mid, Borah Gear bivy, small Xlite pad, HMG stuff pillow, and a 35° EE quilt. Total wt. complete with everything including stakes, stuff sacks, etc., is about 47oz. Some stuff I bought new and some I purchased used, but unfortunately it was still not cheap. It is however, light, packs down pretty small, and is very storm worthy.
