All right so I'm trying to get this 28 nosler shooting to my satisfaction, I'm trying out some berger 175 elite hunters and Barnes 175 TSX. This rifle is strictly for hunting I do not do any target shooting other than sighting in and maybe for some fun every now and then. I think I have found where are the rightful wants to be at but it just seems like a waste of this cartridge simply because the benefits of this cartridge are how fast you can send bullet and how much energy it maintains but where it likes to shoot so far is in the minimum powder range putting it at around 2,900 fps with a 175 grain bullet. Any ideas what I should try it's just crazy that I see people lobbing a 195 Berger at over 3,100 feet a second and getting cloverleaf's.

Have you tried adjusting your seating depth? Specifically, is the bullet rammed into the grooves or does it have any jump? That would be the first place I would start if you want to stick with the Barnes. If you are open to other bullets, try Berger, Hornady ELD X, etc and see if something else behaves a little better.

Yes I have tested a couple different depths and have landed at 20 thou of the lands

How many powders have you tried? What velocities are you shooting for? What twist barrel? Have you looked at the 180 eldm? The BC numbers are awesome (though some claim inflated) and is a killer on game.

If I had a 28 nos that’s what I’d try- 195 eol, 180 eldm, 190 Atip!

H1000, retumbo are the powders I tried, I never have really chased velocity, but I'd at least like to beat out my 300 with a 180. The barrel is a 9 twist rate. Have some Barnes ttsx I haven't really tried with much testing, I have tried the 168 eldx and it was acceptable to some I'm sure, but not me @ like 2.5 group at 100.

With your 1:9 the 180 Berger is about as heavy you should go. Have you called Berger for their load data? What powders and velocity are they saying you should go?

I shoot the 162 eldm out of a 7 SAUM, has similar BC to the 175 eol but you might be able to push it faster.

the Barnes 168 LRX calls for 1:8 twist. The 145 LRX should go really fast out of a 28 NOS!

But Accuracy is more important than speed!

You are absolutely right I never did Chase velocity. I am all about the accuracy, this is not a paper rifle it will be strictly for hunting in the mountains. I did send an email to Burger and requested they're loading data but later found out that they will not email back due to one thing or another but they will give it over the phone then the weekend came so I was not able to get ahold of them but I will try today. The only thing that's got me a little stumped is my 300 win mag can lava 180 gr at 3000+but I can't get this 28 nosler to lob a 175 at 3000 according to noslers book. Just seems like a little bit of a waste of the caliber if I can't use it to its full potential?

I have a buddy who has this same rifle and shot several different bullets and finally found out his really liked a factory loaded Nosler accubond 160 gr

Was group A your first string and were the 2 holes touching your first two shots? I ask this, and before you get all hurt I ask because I have done this and have seen it done, because I'm wondering if it's you or maybe a hot barrel. Are you sure your not flinching just a bit or jerking the trigger, if the two touching shots were your first I would say you started to get recoil jumpy and like you stated you don't target shoot so I assume you probably don't shoot a lot or at least shoot big calibers a lot.

From 35 years of reloading and helping others develop a good load for there firearms I have learned that a lot of these so called bad loads or problem rifles are really shooter error. Yep most guys finally find a good load for the rifle after quite a few rounds down range but is the load really all that better or did all them rounds down range improve there shooting?

I used to take my hunting rifles to the range to check sight in and think the load must not have been as good as I though due to the group size, come back a week later and the same load would punch a one hole group. I shoot more often now so I don't have as many of these days but there are still a few days when I walk away shaking my head in disgust at my shooting ability.

Why don't you load up 20 or so rounds from the group c target and just go shoot them, see what a larger sample size does and really focus on trigger pull and shooting form.

I also use a PAST Recoil Pad when shooting larger calibers. When shooting my 7mm RM at about 10 rounds I have had enough recoil but with the sissy pad I can shoot it all day. There are some days I will shoot 100 rounds out of calibers from 308 to 375 H&H and I don't notice any recoil effects. Kind of funny how my shooting buddy's gave me a bunch of crap about my sissy pad until they tried it and now when they set down to shoot they almost demand the use of it.

I am completely open to some constructive criticism. That being said I found the case length node I needed from 3.904-3.910. I now am shooting single bullet holes groups. P.s I do shoot alot, but not in the sense that I am a "target" shooter

Sincerely,

You try a ladder at like 300? I've found that to yield great results in under 20 rounds..

Kasey
I did not, actually never really occurred to me as so many more variables come into play at distance. I my tray it out with another rifle just to see what happens

My Hells Canyon 28 shoots very well with 75 grains of H1000, 3075 fps with a 180 Hybrid. I only ever shoot 2 shot groups with this gun, but this is very typical. This is what I want to see out of a hunting rifle, the cold bore and the follower touching. IMG_20200622_122946.jpg
