I’m curious about your opinions on when an arrow is as optimized as it needs to be/can get for a heavy poundage bow with a long draw. This setup is a season long Montana archery elk setup, but I also hunt lighter deer, antelope, and black bear with it. I’m shooting a Hoyt Rx1-ultra at 82.5lbs and 31.5” draw length, my arrow is a Black Eagle Spartan 200 spine 32 1/2”. As it sits my arrow setup weighs 540gr +/- a couple of gr for broadhead inconsistency. At this time I’m shooting 100gr iron wills for my fixed blade and 100 gr rage trypans for my mech. My question to you is, if my setup is tuned up and shooting great with 100gr broadheads, and I can’t get it to paper tune or group 125 gr heads near as well, is it worth the work and adjustments it would take to get the heavier heads to fly for just the extra 25gr up front. Is my arrow maxed out at a 100gr head without twisting cables and adjusting cams and all that. I’ve never had a problem with penetration, and my speed is 297-299, so is 25 gr heavier in your opinion worth it, or would you think that if it ain’t broke don’t fix it? I’m probably at the point of diminished returns going up in arrow weight because I’m getting pass through shots on heavy bone if I decide to high shoulder shoot something. But if 540gr is good, wouldn’t 565gr be better? If you have any thoughts on when enough is enough please let me know. By the way, it’s the off season and podcasts are making my brain go into overdrive thinking about what if’s.

Thank you,

Jake

A 540 gr arrow going 300 fps..... Yea, I think your going to be OK. I would only think of messing with the extra 25 gr point weight if it HELPED with tuning.

Did you try the 125 yet? If so and doesn’t fly right stick with what you got.

Yes I have, and they don’t fly near like my setup right now. With the draw weight and length, I’m thinking adding 25gr up front is making my arrow slightly underspined. Which is causing them to fly and group poorly. But that’s just my thought

I'm shooting .300 spine TR Crush arrows at 500gr with 125's at 75lbs and 32 1/2" draw, and they are shooting like a dream, but they are also cut at 29.5-30". I was shooting the Kinetic XT 200's which shot fine until they didn't. Now they're all over the place on a RAM spine tester, and they shoot like it.

25gr isn't going to change much of anything. Shoot whatever you're confident in and shoots well.

Tried the Kinetic Kaos 200s? Supposed to be tougher and straighter.

I ran it through ontarget2 software. Shows your way stiff. You could jump up to a 100 gr insert and still be a bit stiff. Thats with a 32 in arrow.

Obviously what you are shooting will work just fine. Personally, I would keep upping weight until the FPS was down in the 275-280 range. With that draw weight and draw length you have an over abundance of energy available, why not use more arrow to take more of that energy. Wont make critters any more dead but it will make the bow more quiet. Pretty much no bad answers for you, a great problem to have.

I agree. That speed also gets you a good spine.

Cut some carbon off the back to shorten it up an inch and maybe that will make it stiff enough to run 125? I run a 29.75” shaft on 30.5 draw and still have room to cut more if needed.
