Wanted to post this as a reminder to wear ear pro and see an audiologist every year or two.
Had an audiogram and some other tests this morning. First one in about 9 years. Need to do that more often. But my hearing has been pretty stable over that time, thanks to using hearing protection during hunting and anything remotely loud. Back 9 years ago, I had started noticing a lot of tinnitus in my left ear and started having issues understanding people in loud environments or places where sound bounces around. I went to the audiologist, got tested, and ended up buying a pair of custom fit, SoundGear platinum in-the-ear electronic plugs. Been wearing them for all my hunting ever since and they are still going strong.
My left ear still has high frequency hearing loss starting above 4khz and tinnitus. Right ear is still normal. They now have some electronic plugs that reduce tinnitus. I was able to try one durning my appt this morning. Definitely makes a big difference, but my tinnitus isn’t debilitating yet. For those of you who have it, go see your audiologist to see if they can help you.
Your insurance should cover hearing exams and part of the cost for hearing aids. But it’s worth biting the bullet and getting some good electronic ear protection. I use a pair of Sordin muffs at the range and foamies under that if shooting a handgun or if I’m anywhere near people with brakes. I use the SoundGear plugs when I am hunting. I can hear quail call with those things in several hundred yards away. Worth every penny.
