Heading out in a week. (Unit 71)

Hey guys,

Ill be leaving in a week. Ill be hunting unit 71. I talked to some locals and they all recommended Lizard Head Wilderness. I found some spots I like (mostly around Wilson Meadows) but Im solo hunting I am concerned about getting an elk out of there. Ive asked around about Sheep Mountain and theres not a ton of info. Lots of threads saying there used to be guides in that area. I called a few guides and they don't hunt that area. (more money than I could afford anyway) Called the wildlife office and talked to a few different people, they weren't able to offer much info either.

Id like to hunt the area between Sheep Mountain and Flattop Mountain. Ill be on foot. It appears to be super thick timber but theres a trail that leads as far as I want to go. Has anyone hunted that? How difficult is that terrain? Again Im solo hunting so my concern is getting an elk out. Is there a lot of traffic on that trail? Its called East Fork Trail. I saw its open to dirt Bikes, should that be a concern?

Im open to both areas, from the map it just appears like there would be less pressure over by sheep mountain because there are fewer trails.

Just talked to a local hunter this morning that was hunting around Rico and Lizard head this past weekend. He said there are a few groups over there but mostly atv road hunter folks. He did mention that it’s steep country. Really steep. But there are elk in there. Just depends on how hard you are willing to work for it and what kind of shape you are in. But if you are prepared then the odds are good.
