Hey all.... I'm planning an Axis deer hunt on the island of Molokai in 26. The biggest question i have that I'd really appreciate you fine gents' help with is regarding taxidermy. For those of you that have harvested game in Hawaii, please tell me the route you took with your mounts and any recommendations. I cannot fly it back to the mainland so I'm looking specifically for taxidermy on one of the islands. Thank you!
 
Only a few guys do decent work from what I have seen. There is NOBODY on Molokai I would trust to do one- especially after the cost for the hunt and getting there.

Ohana taxidermy is another- but if it were me I would do Maui taxidermy.

Have you used Maui?

I have followed them on IG for a long time and have seen there work and purchased an axis rug from them. They get used a lot and I believe the main guides on Maui recommend them to their clients as well.

Why would you not be allowed to take it off the island ? Have the taxidermist or yourself skin the deer out . And cut the rack off and ship back state side.
And if they dont allow that have the taxidermist skin flesh,split turn and salt and ship it over. I've never heard of that at all where they wouldn't allow someone to bring it back . Get it mounted over here

Have you experience in flying antlers home? That's the biggest obstacle I think.
 
I just got back from a hunt on Lanai. Just clean up the skull and remove the brain as best you can then wrap it tight in plastic wrap and freeze it. Then box it up and fly home with it. That'll save you hundreds of dollars in shipping it later on. And get the taxidermist to flesh and freeze the hide.

Make sure you leave yourself a couple of days on the backend to get the meat and skull fully frozen. That was a lesson learned on our part. Don't fly home the day after your hunt.
