Sitting here bored and it occurred to me as I’m listening to a podcast about fair chase. I’ve ran a few animals down.

I cut my teeth as a bow hunter. But I also use the old boom stick. Last year I got my ass handed to me in all my archery hunts. That led to a big chip in my shoulder. I rifle hunted deer and antelope in that season as well. And I literally chased down both animals.

The deer winded me and ran over a small hill. I gave chase for probably 1/4 mile in open country over the hill and dropped him as he thought I was gone. On the antelope I actually over shot a herd I was hunting because of a big buck. I overshot them by at least 1/2 mile. As I was getting high I saw them single file going through a valley and headed for private land sanctuary. I’d been burned by this buck at least 6 times already and I wasn’t gonna let it happen again. I dropped my pack got on the other side of the military ridge and sprinted over lava rack and sage to cut him off. I shot missed and wouldn’t ya know hit he ran right to me (sun was at my back) all the way to under 50 yards.

Have any of you actually ran after your prey? This should be fun to hear!

Yes indeed 3 bulls come to mind after several close encounters and bugling matches the bulls would round their cows and move on my motto if they keep bugling the chase in on. Keep the wind and let’s go on this hunt I had someone with me as would get in close he would take off get in close and take off I almost lost my partner several but would wait for him and he would come up sweating and huffing and I’m like I hear him letsgo👊 After two hours we got in between his cows and him quick bugle some chirps and he came unglued coming in very quick to 14 yards🤩20C76D33-547C-4AD3-AF7B-12F24D6E81B7.jpeg

Coming back from a morning hunt I noticed some cows working up a hillside. I made my way up after them but never got a shot. Part of me wanted to just go back to camp and take a nap but i ecided to say F it and take up after them. I hoofed it 1/4 mile and about 300 ft of elevation up to point where I had shot a cow from the year before. Eighty head of elk were below me at 240 yds. After muttering something along the lines of "Holy F***" I layed down and picked out a bull and the rest is history. I've also ran after many mule deer. they don't usually go too far thankfully!

Well it seems the Eff it is strong with you brother! Lol. That had to feel awesome to get up there and see all those elk. It’s the guy who goes back to camp that can’t tell that story. Outstanding.

There's those that suffer from paralysis by analysis.....and those that make shit happen. Sometimes it blows up, but it's better than watching opportunity slip away.

If you're not willing to book it to get into position and give it a full 110%, where's the challenge and fun in it?
I've been busted more times then I can count because of it. But always a learning experience an a blast regardless!
Just gotta make sure your hunting partner knows what's goin on before ya ghost him to get ahead of your target animal lol

This doesnt sound like fair chase at all. Most animals I pursue have twice the number of legs that I have. How is that fair to me????

I chased a mule deer for better part of a half mile. I finally caught up to him in a cliff band, but by the time I could see him I was already in the cliffs. I realized I was in such a stupid spot that the recoil could possible unsettle me enough to knock me off the cliff. Figured I had time to back up and get into a more stable position. The buck then made such an impressive series of jumps to clear the cliffs that I just stood there Dumb struck while he sprinted away.

Tracked him for another 2 hours and never got another shot. Came back the next day as I wanted to inspect the area that I'd lost him in. The bugger had bedded down 100' from where I gave up the chase. Probably watched me walk away in defeat. But he showed me a zone which I hadnt seen before and has yielded alot of deer over the years.

Of course, that's how I hunt. As soon as I get the right bugle response, I'm already on the run at that point........so yes. I've also chased herds up and over and down and over several ridges in a morning or evening as well. That's why I'm usually dripping in sweat while elk hunting. That's just my nature, I'm always on the move and aggressive. Too aggressive in many cases, but as Ross said.......you win a few and lose a bunch more.

Some dudes on New Mexico have it a try when I was down there and the “born to run” craze was hot. Here’s the article, I haven’t seen the documentary.

Hahaha. Yeah I’ve ghosted a few hunting partners dude. It’s always funny to come back to them and they are like “Where’d ya go!?” I’ve also hunted with guys that really only go after animals in front of them.

I like your style brother. Wish I could find some guys around here with that mentality! All I can find are whiners and planners.
