Havalon vs KOA Jager

I have a Jim shockey titan. Essentially it has the havlon surgical blade on one end and a heavy duty fixed blade that pulls out the other end. So far I love it , only have to pack one knife but has both blades on it

Outdoor edge razor pro, the skinner blade is amazing.

Been using the piranta for a long time. No issues changing blades. Broke a few of the thin blades but it was my fault. Ive used it on everything from Javalina to elk.

I just got back from Kodiak where a friend and I broke down and boned out 4 deer. I had my Havalon and Dozier skinner and never once touched the Dozier. The Havalons aren't great at everything (skinning, quartering, boning, caping), but good enough at all of those activities to the point I don't feel like I need another knife for animal work. I removed 2 skulls from the spinal column and multiple lower legs without any broken blades.

When changing blades I can carefully lift the very back unsharpened portion of the blade with my weak hand index finger nail and not expose myself to the sharpened portion of the blade.

I used the havalon and broke blades, had blades come loose and remove themselves, no doubt all operator error on my part. But that doesnt sit well with me. A tool with this much possible damage to the user needs to be safer . That's just my opinion. I actually found the part of the blade I broke (yes I looked in the animal and didn't find it and figured it was on the ground) in the animal when I brought it in to process it.
The havalon is a great knife as far as sharpness and able to do the job quickly, but it is a problem when it comes to safety.

I will be trying the Out door edge this year. I don't mind cleaning nooks and crannies when I get back home. I want the folding knife, type. I carry a sheath on my belt that holds another folding knife and a solid knife, so I am never knife poor anyway.

Skinny, quartering and caping with these new type of blades is a world a part than with the old way. I just need to be safer and go slower I guess, but the Havalons need to address the "potential" for issues out in the field.

mfllood,

The blades you broke, are those the regular ones or the thicker 60A blades? I haven't broken a blade yet and I do use the thicker 60A blades.

I use the OE and just ordered two more off Amazon for just over $40. I figure I can just toss a used one in the cooler, fridge, or freezer until I get time to clean and grab a clean one. My Havalon Torch will be in the classifieds when I get a chance.

It ain't what, it's how. I could gut and skin with an Xacto knife given the time. Making meat 5" Vic takes over.
