Haul road airboat hunt

we were there the last two weeks in August. We camped just off the river, but hiked out 3-6 miles each day. from what I saw, the area near the 5 miles zone is VERY popular. We were on the Ivishak about 200 Yards upstream of the 5 mile zone. there was one camp below on the same side of the river (the ones that came on the bulls we were watching on the last day) one camp above us on thew same side of the river and two camps across the river.

If the herd was moving better it may not be an issue, but when you only see two small groups of bulls in 9 days having a lot of neighbors makes low odd even lower. From what I saw I cant imagine that area ever not being busy. it's so much cheaper to get dropped off in that area so I think that's why it's become much more popular. having cell service in that area may also be a contributing factor in why so many people seem to be flocking to that area.

I know there are different strokes for different folks, but there is no way I’d pay the money they’re wanting for airboat drop off only to be a mile or less from the next group and having airboat traffic in my back pocket. I’d save up a few more dollars and use an air transporter, which would hopefully lead to a bit more breathing room.

The air transporters that only cost a few more dollars drop you a couple miles off the river. We shot one of our bulls about a half mile from one of there camps. Those guys pain over twice what we did and had people around them the whole week. Unfortunately you have to pay a lot more to get the “remote” wilderness experience.

This trip was not without its faults but I would gladly do it again.

We had a great trip up there. This was from two years ago but I’m just getting on this forum. Blown Away Airboat Adventures took us in. We went four for four on caribou with a bonus wolf.
Thanks for the information.

After being in there , my opinion is that doesn’t exist. If one airboat can get there they all can. We had a lot of success but there is definitely a level of luck that factors in and I don’t like relying on luck.im happy to anwser any questions people may have. Just shoot me a message.

P.S. Rj did well by us as well!
Hello, I’m looking into a 2027 diy caribou drop camp using blown away airboats. My question is would you do the hunt the exact way again? Reason I’m asking is the amount of people everyone sees out in the field. Was it difficult to get away from everyone?

That’s hard to answer. If I went again I would probably set myself up to be able to spike camp out more and not come back to the main camp every night incase we were not seeing animals. With that said, there was no reason for that on our trip because we had bulls around camp. The reality is you’ll never “out do” the next guy and there are a lot of people dreaming about Alaska right now, so make a solid plan with 10 back plans and you should be good!😂.

I appreciate you getting back to me. Now I just gotta find some buddies that want to do this crazy shit with me lol. Did you guys bring your own camping gear or rent it up there?
