I have 6.5 Creedmoor Proof Research blank barrel I would like to install on a Reminton 700 SPS Tact. Action currently in 308. Im trying to build a light weight hunting Rifle with long range and barrel swap capability. I was orginally looking at maybe a WTO Switchlug but I have 0 experience with a switch setup. I was looking to get opinions and Recommendations for a Riflesmith. Any help will be greatly appreciated

Interested in Blue printing Action, Upgrade Bolt Knob, Thread barrel for action and Muzzle, and possible switch set up.

I just finished a switch barrel build with that lug, pleased with the results so far! No need for special wrenches and I can switch barrels out with the action in the stock.

Proper set up shouldered barrel and action with pinned lug has zero reason for that lug. Barrel swaps are simple with barrels made to headspace on your action.
Here are a couple list of smiths quick(sorry in a hurry) and there are many more.

Help me understand. If the barrel is cut to the correct head space for a particular action all the switch lug is doing is adding pressure with the allen screw to hold it in place but is not necessary?

Was your barrel cut to fit your action for correct head space or does the switch lug hold your head space?

Barrels are cut for your action. Lug is just pinned to action so it stays in the same spot and doesn't spin when putting barrel on. Shouldered barrels are cut for the action, simply but barrel in barrel vise and spin the action on or off with a action wrench and give it a good firm snap to tight
Some of my gun/barrels I can do while in the stock, some I have to take out(carbon barrels)

Have WTO do it, or contact Mike (Hell's Canyon Armory), a sponsor here.

Brad is describing the conventional method of barrel changing where you use torque to keep the barrel from loosening while you shoot. The switchlug allows you to hand tighten the barrel, and the pinch bolt on the lug keeps it from shooting loose. Both methods require the barrel be shouldered, and headspaced to your action.

It's a nice setup that simplifies barrel swaps for a particular rifle you like.

You have your understanding right... the barrels still have a shoulder and they headspace up against the WTO lug. The shoulder is simply bumped forward to allow for a 1 degree tapered section that fits inside the lug. When you tighten the Allen key it clamps this section and holds the barrel from unscrewing, keeping it in headspace. Here is a picture of a Remington 700 factory barrel (stainless) and the same barrel machined for the SwitchLug (dark ceracoat).

Also a pic of the SwitchLug installed with the modified factory barrel partly screwed in. No modifications needed to my Talley rings.

Yes I understand now. That's the route I'm going to go.

Matt Whaley has done the wto as has Dallas Lane. You would be in great hands with either. Matt is in North Idaho, Dallas in southern Idaho.

There's a lot of great smiths around that are not super famous. The two I mentioned are great at building guns and killing shit. The trip to Matt's trophy house will make most guys wonder what they have been doing wrong their whole lives.
