I'm hoping to do an elk hunt in 2026. With that being said i'll have 5 points in wyoming and only a couple in other states. Looking for guided elk hunts in wyoming, colorado, utah, or montana that i would be able to get a tag. I'm not looking to break the bank but im also not looking for a 350" bull, more so a guide that will put us around elk and help us learn more about elk hunting. im looking for a back pack style trip, not one where you stay at a lodge etc. i would also be open to a drop camp that i could get around some animals and go without a guide.

Do you have interest in just doing the work yourself with online scouting and doing it DIY? With 5-6 point and some unit research I think you could do well just going for it yourself. Save the guide money for your taxidermy bill after the hunt 🙂 if you want to really learn about elk/elk hunting then get out there and start observing/hunting them!

I gotcha. I’ve done both. Just prepare yourself for a guided hunt. I’ve found when doing DIY and I’m unsuccessful, I still come home happy because of the experience. Whenever I do guided and come home empty handed, it’s a lot harder to swallow because of the money I shelled out. Guided hunts are great in they teach you some tricks for hunting elk, but they are not 100% on the kill.

Apply in Wyoming. With only five points you better start rolling the dice now. You might never catch up to point creep so my advice is to get in on the game anytime you can and hope for some luck.

After that, you can apply for Montana. If you draw the Montana license, you could always withdraw your Wyoming application before the deadline in early May.

I just got back from a hunt with Nontypical outfitters and had a great time. I would recommend them to anybody.
