Hello Everyone - I was looking to have someone on my podcast who has been attacked by a grizzly bear while elk hunting. I would be very interested in talking with one of the Montana hunters from the 2019 attacks or anything recent within the last couple of years. If anyone knows anyone, have them send me a message here or fill out my contact form on Transition Wild. Thank you!

Mike, I have to hear more to this story and assume others would as well.

I hope you are ok now and your injuries were not to severe and you have healed. It states you had a .44 Mag, this makes you the most knowledgable person I know to ask if you would say a 10mm would have been ok and more rounds.

Please share.

I reached out to Mike in to recording a podcast. We are in communication and will be recording one at some point. In the meantime, I am recording one with Mtnkid85. He has an interesting story too.

Due to personal issues I am unable to do a podcast, but I will say that having more rounds would not have helped me. I had just crossed a fairly large creek when I heard a stick break; I assumed it was a moose. When I looked in the direction of the sound I saw 4 bears running toward me. I yelled and waved my arms and the 3 yearlings stopped but the sow kept coming. My spray was on my left side (I’m left handed) and I knew my left side was going to be hit. I raised my left arm and drew the pistol with my right hand as she hit me. It took her about 5 seconds to reach me.

She was about a 300# sow and knocked me down easily, with my left arm in her mouth. I shot 5 times as quickly as possible and she released me. I got to my feet and she was standing about 50’ away looking at me. With 1 round left I stood my ground, and she turned and disappeared into the forest. I never saw any of them again. The entire attack lasted less than a minute.

Long story short, I hiked out about 2 miles to a road and was transported to a hospital an hour away for treatment. The bear survived the shooting, which is incredible. I had bear hairs on my front sight! I convalesced for a week, and was able to get back out and kill a cow elk on the last day of archery season.

Glad you survived!

How many times do you think you hit the bear and where?

Knowing what you know now after having survived this attack, what would you recommend others do in order to be most prepared?

Thank you for sharing! I truly hope you’ve healed and have made a full recovery.

I am sure I hit her every time, but I have no idea where. Most of the shots were point blank while she was on top of me.

I don’t know what I could have done differently. The wind was blowing from them to me, and the creek muffled any sound. They were down in a little dip in the ground, and I walked right into them. It was the perfect storm.

My hunting partner was charged by a grizzly in Montana this year. I was about 200 yards away from him when it happened. Luckily he sprayed the bear at 10 feet, and it retreated!

Mike- thanks for the write up and I hope you've completely recovered. Incredible that you were able to get back out there and use your bow so soon, well done! Hard to believe anything could survive 5 shots from a 44 mag. I know they're tough, but, holy cow! Sounds like you did everything that you could given the circumstances, glad you're OK.
