My grandma, mom's mom passed yesterday. She used to hunt in her younger years and loved to eat wild game. Really wish I had a chance to share with her before she passed.

This morning I decided I was gonna go deer hunting. Last weekend of Kansas Muzzleloader and only the second time I've been able to go. Didn't care if I shot a buck or doe but I just figured some deer meat would be nice to eat and think of Grandma while doing it.

Got out on the edge of a cut corn field at 20 minutes to legal. Owls are hooting in the timber I'm setting in and turkeys are beginning to wake up. As I settle down in my fold up chair (yep, I hate sitting of the ground) I say a little prayer asking the Lord for deer for Grandma. I said I don't care what it is Lord, they're all made of meat.

Right at legal time a doe, a fawn and another doe walked into the corn. Tried to line up but it was still to dark to see the front sight through my peep. The does feed under a little rise and go out of sight. A little while goes by and I stand up to see if I can see the does when I notice a deer coming from the direction they came from. Put the glasses on it and sure enough it's a buck. Sit back down and wait. The original buck and a smaller buck gradually feed towards me. I lined up a couple times and kept telling myself that's a far shot, can't see the front sight good enough and other excuses. Finally I lined up and got a bead and touched the trigger off. Deer hit the ground immediately. Couldn't believe it! A hundred yards shot with a peep that I've only shot in paper to 35 yards.

Thanks Lord for the buck. And thanks Grandma for helping guide my bullet.

Excuse the crappy picture

Awesome! Grandma's hunting legacy lives on through you strongly.
She quit huntin long before I was born. She crippled a barn burner one time and a kid ended up shooting it as she trailed it. Said well I guess he's yours and hung the rifle up after that.

But she always encouraged me to hunt, was one of the few voices of encouragement within my family when I first started duck hunting.

Great deer and story! Your grandma was with you! Congrats

My Nana used to hunt also. Not so much in the last few decades. Not long ago she "hunted" a mouse in her kitchen with a bolt action 410 shotgun. She went 0-4 on the mouse before Grandpa disarmed her. The base board, cabinet, and floor weren't as lucky as the mouse.
On her last visit down to my farm last fall she took a liking to my wife's 38 revolver and took it home with her. She is 88 years old. If your 88 year old Nana says she wants a gun you give it to her along with a couple of boxes of ammo. She put 5 out of 5 rounds of 38 SPL +P self defense ammo into a milk jug at 15 yards on her first go around so I guess she is qualified on it.

My paternal grandma, also passed on, was an excellent shot from what my grandpa had told me. He was trying to shoot a squirrel out for supper when they were young parents and money was tight. He missed several times which irritated Grandma and she took the 22 rifle and shot one time and killed the squirrel.

Grandmas are a blessing. Enjoy all the time you have with yours
