Looks like I will be in Grand Prairie for 4 weeks in September on training so I’m looking for cool stuff to do.

I will probably bring my bow so is there any ranges in the area that aren’t too expensive? It’s not very often I’m kid/family free so I could shoot pretty much every day. Any 3D courses?

I want to shoot something full auto as well since I’ve never done it before. The last and only time I was there I didn’t have the time to go anywhere since it was such a short trip. I know there are a couple places you can go for that, any advice on which one?

I’ve heard hog hunting is popular but I know nothing about it. How cheap can you do that on a weekend?

Cheers!

Defensive Arms Academy does full auto, they come to Wyoming with their weapons for a shoot up here and are great folks.
Hogs would be doable in Sept, before deer season.
I would check here for hog hunt reccs.

TexasBowhunter might also have info on places to shoot or maybe a 3D shoot then.

Thanks I’ll check them out.

One other thing I forgot to mention, which bbq places should I check out. I’ll have 3 weekends so I’m sure I’ll put some weight on 😂

I have never been but people speak highly of Cinnamon Creek Archery. It is kind of the other side of the metroplex from grand prairie though.

This, Cinnamon Creek Ranch is a 140ish acre archery and wild game processing establishment in Roanoke, TX. By Alliance Airport, North of Ft Worth. They have a 80-100 yard static range area and multiple 3D courses with varied terrain, shot distances, etc. IF you’ve got time to spend a few hours there, it is worth your time to travel over there. Great bow shop as well.
Static range is about $16/day and 3D is $35ish but varies depending on the courses you choose. When you’re here in TX…GO. SHOOT. ENJOY

I don’t know what the other side of the metroplex means but I will start searching…

Grand Prairie is on the southern end, Roanoke is to the north. You can be there in 30-45 mins depending on traffic.while you’re in Roanoke, check out the downtown area for lunch. Hard 8 BBQ is always a good choice, but there are lots of other options there.

The last time I was in Texas someone mentioned Hard 8 but I didn’t have time to go, I’ll be sure to check it out.

Also rodeo goat for a burger.

Can’t help much on the hunting locations but anywhere in north Texas or southern Oklahoma along red river would be easy to do a day hunt for hogs with a guide. Could also do a Striper guide on lake Texoma if your into that

If you're going to Cinamon Creek then dive up the intesrstate, I-35, to highway 82 and go West to Lindsay for BBQ and then to Muenster for some sausage at Fischer's or Hess Meats.

I like Lockhart Smokehouse in Plano because they have the best sausage I have ever tried. Pecan Lodge near downtown Dallas is nice.

I am not a huge Hard 8 fan.

Hard 8 is “fun” because of the way you get to pick the meat from the pit and the pit-master carves it for you. Would not say it’s the best BBQ though, much prefer Lockharts. Hard 8 is not bad by any stretch of the imagination.

If you like whiskey, would highly recommend Whiskey Cake. Food is great, whiskey selection is phenomenal.

Could always spend a day over at Grandscape. They have a Hard 8, Mi Dia, Scheels, Cigars International, Truck Yard (brewery food truck type place) and bunch of other stuff. Not quite that outdoorsy, but time away from family usually means enjoying self deprecating pastimes (cigars, drinking, unhealthy food options, etc).

If you want to shoot full autofocus to Texas Gun Experience in grapevine. Their selection goes from small round sub to a minigun. They’re $$ though.
I shoot at cinnamon creek for archery. Nice people and great shop.

Cinnamon creek is the best Archery range to go to, but from Grand Prairie, it’s a little bit of a haul through the metromess… there is a cabelas FWIW very close to it
