Ok so i know i am new here but i need some help. I am planing on hunting in areas that i don't know for the next few years and need a gps unit. From my research i have not found one that will take an onix chip and has a sos button so that is out but what is a good bang for your buck? I was looking at the garmin 64st because it would accept a chip but i cant stay in touch with home when i am out. Then there is the garmin inreach explorer that has everything i want i think but i cant put onix on it to make suere i stay off private land. What are your thoughts on the matter, also i dont trust my phone enough to use and would prefer a separate unit. Has anyone used the inreach and found it acceptable? If not do you carry a separate sos unit or do you feel that having one is not that important?

Thanks in advance, i look forward to hearing peoples thoughts.

You can subscribe to ownership maps from Garmin on the explorer+. Not as good as onx, but good for land ownership. I think it costs about $30 per year.

I have always carried my garmin gpsmap 62stc with the onx chip. This was the first year i used the onx map on my phone. I still carried my 62 but it never even took it out of my pack. The onx phone app with the maps downloaded worked great. You just need to make sure you download the maps so you dont need cell service or data. I also used an inreach for the first time last year. It was paired with my phone and worked great. The inreach uses the earthmate app on your phone and that worked great. It does not have land owner info but i prefer that gps app.
