GPS Options for Iphone - Gaia or Onyx or?

Is there an app that'll do the same stuff? Mostly tracking for those midnight hikes with heavy loads.

There's also one called Topo Maps. $8 buy in but free map downloads. You download scans of the USGS quads for the area(s) you need. Biggest con is there is no tracking/bread crumbs. Biggest pro is that the map on your phone is the same as the paper quad you buy. There are a few other features I find helpful as well. I use it and Gaia mainly. Gaia goes on sale occasionally. Picked it up for $10 a while back. Use App Shopper to get alerts when apps go on sale.

I used GAIA, on a backcountry Wyoming hunt last week. Week very nicely! My buddy had a Garmin, which worked well, but the screen is much smaller then my Iphone 6plus, and the map detail much better then his Garmin.

GAIA. just make sure you have a good case and screen protection, a big phones screen is more vulnerable IMO.

I went with Gaia this year and I wasn't very impressed. Think I am going back to the good ole garmin. The directional arrow on my phone almost never displayed accurately. Not a big deal when its light out but in the dark it sucked.

I found the garmin to be much more reliable both with the directional arrow and location accuracy in deep cover. Several times my gaia retrieved bad results due to a bad connection, never really happened with the Garmin in the same area in the past.

This has nothing to do with Gaia, but the phone hardware. What phone do you have? Also, most phones ship with the magnetometer uncalibrated, which is a pain to do but possible. Location should never be displayed with inaccuries greater than about 30m even in heavy cover.
