Went for a ride a few weeks ago. Spotted a grizzly stocked to get a little closer but I decided it was a little smaller than I wanted

. Am I crazy for not getting closer and shooting it?

Naw. I’ve definitely let bears walk for various reasons. If you don’t want to shoot for whatever reason, don’t.

Now, I’ve aged some and I simply enjoy the hunt more than than I ever did as a young man. I have fairly high standards at this point in my life for squeezing, being close to them is often fine for me nowadays.

When we had grizzly hunting in BC I passed up a grizzly at 15 yds (ugly hide) and another at 30 yds (beautiful gray color). Both were smaller size bears but a rush to be in close to with an arrow on the string. Glad I did as I finally arrowed a decent P&Y bear a few years later. Nothing wrong with passing up critters if you felt at the time it was the thing to do.

To me, just getting close with a bow is where the fun would be.......size wouldn't be quite as important. But everyone has their own preferences. With elk I pass on bulls frequently. But I've never chased a grizz before, so I would have gotten closer and shot him.

I think next time if I can get that close I might shoot. Seems like a fun opportunity either way. I just don’t want to clean a small bear
