Google Earth Scouting

acme mapper is my go to site for topo and sat images. Can swap back and forth, you cant do the tools however incorporated in the the GE software

I prefer hunting away from crowds so I'm always trying to ensure there are no ATV roads which are hard to differ from trails sometimes. Benches below ridge lines are awesome. I pick 4-5 really good looking spots (in my mind haha) this time of year when the cabin fever is strong and try to scout them all on the ground by mid summer. I also study the terrain in spots I know are proven good and try and find the same combinations in other spots. If nothing else GE keeps me sane when the snow is 7ft deep in the high country.

I really liked Bar's response. He said "My style of hunting is .... So, ..." What you look for is dependent on your style of hunting and the area you will hunt. I tree stand hunt, so ...
If I will be hunting a semi desert area I look for water, then benches and bedding areas. I like to see game trails coming together. One thing I could care less about is aspect. Elk are not limited to north slopes at all. I have found them on flats and bedding in niches on generally more open south facing slopes.
Look for areas where you can expect to find elk based on your style of hunting. Look for spots where you can take advantage of their vulnerabilities. If you are not looking for those things, then look at habitat and see if and how you can best access it and hunt it. Just my thoughts.
