Going smaller!

Just for reference with an 8.5 rifle set up (based scope and suppressor as planned by the OP)

30-06 w/ 168gr bullets - 19.5 ft lbs of recoil
6.5 Creedmoor w/ 140gr bullets - 13 ft lbs (33% reduction)
6 Creed/243 w/ 108 gr bullets - 10ft lbs (49% reduction)

Both will provide a very nicely noticed reduction in recoil. Personally a 6.5 Creed at around 8-8.5lbs is very shootable.

I think a big factor in your selection will be barrel length. If you are going 16-18" I would 100% go with a 6 Creedmoor as the 6.5 CM velocity drops off a lot and may limit your range. If going 20" I think you can go either 6 or 6.5 CM. Barrel life of the 6.5 Creed (3000 rounds) will be about three times as long as a 6 Creed (1200 rounds) if that is a factor.

16" - 6.5 Creedmoor w/140s = 2500-2550 fps
16" - 6 Creed w/ 108gr = 2800-2850 fps

20" - 6.5 Creedmoor w/140s = 2650 fps
20" - 6 Creed w/ 108gr = 2900-2950 fps

IMO you will not really be giving up anything to the 30-06 in game killing capability, especially considering your accuracy will improve and you will be delivering bullets less affected by wind & with better sectional density.
