Tripods are like backpacks for me! Seems I'm always searching for the perfect one and constantly making changes. This year I have settled on a combo that is my favorite to date. I am using the Pro Master XC525c with the Outdoorsmans pan head. So far, it seems to be a wonderful combination of being lightweight and stable. I generally run a Zeiss 65mm so can't say for sure how it would do with the 80-85mm glass.

I settled on a promaster XC325C and plopped a vangaurd PH 111v on top.

Do you find the XC325c to be too large for packing? I am considering it instead of the XC525c, thinking it will be a touch more stable. A few inches taller and a few bucks cheaper help, too. Thoughts on the 325?

I use either the Outdoorsmans compact medium or the Promaster 525C with either the outdoorsmans pistol grip or bigger pan head. I like the pistol grip head better when glassing with my 15x binos and with the shooting rest for my rifle. I like the pan head better for grid glassing or my spotter. What combo I pack depends on the hunt and if I need to glass standing.

Are you saying the 525c is tall enough for standing use? With binos? Straight our angled spotter?

Yes but it's close. At 5'11" I can use it standing with the outdoorsmans pistol grip head and their pan attachment below that with all my optics as long as I'm not looking downhill at a real steep angle. My boots, the taller head, and pan adapter are just enough to make it comfortable for me.

I can use it with all my optics, the STM65 spotter, the ATS80 spotter and the 10x or 15x binos.

I'm 5'10" and with my Promaster XC525c, Vanguard PH-111v head, and outdoorsman bino adapter, I can use it standing. With bino's, glassing downward standing is not a problem at all. Steep upward standing you have to crank your neck.

This year I'm going with the Gitzo Gt1545t and the Outdoorsmans panhead for my Swaro 20-60x80.

I think you will enjoy that tripod. Same one I have been using for a couple years now. I like it. When it's windy I wish it was a little heavier. I keep wanting to try some of the outdoorsman heads, but my first safari has been working well

I have a SLIK Sprint Pro EZ. I really like it. I've been using it for 5-6 years and never had a problem with it. It is fairly cheap (about $100) and it weighs about the same as the carbon ones (2lbs for the legs). It is tall enough with the center column that I can glass standing up. My only beef is that it isn't the most stable in the wind, but I think for the weight it would be tough to find something that does substantially better. I'd like to know what makes the carbon tripods so desirable besides being able to say "Ooooh, I have a carbon tripod!". The specs are virtually identical, so maybe it has to do with stability or durability? Lots of tripods are in the $300+ range and when I have the money to buy a nicer tripod, I will take that money and upgrade my optics instead! I run the pan head that came with it (SH-707) that weighs 17oz and I only had issues with it after I ran it over with my quad. There are lots of good heads to be had in the sub $100 range and you can get fluid heads starting around $130.
