Go-To Lens in hunting pack

I rip the 24-70 F/2.8 GM but if I was only doing one and no others it would have to be the 24-105 F4 as others have mentioned. The 70-200 is a monster to carry, and the 24-70 lacks a little range for one do it all lens.

I think you need to decide if our going out hunting or for photography. I carried point and shoot cameras several years bird hunting, they fit in a small pouch on my belt. Light weight and out o the way but useable life was simply to short. Last one I got was best, Panasonic ZS 100. has a fixed 25-250 lens and takes as nice of photos as my D 7000 Nikon DSLR. The ZS99 ooms from 24 to 720 range. and about the same size as my ZS100. Light weight and small, rides in a belt pack. I use the ZS100 and have blown photo's from it up to 12"x24" and they rival my Nikon D7000! I suspect the ZS99 will do pretty much as well and cost a little over $700. Way less expensive than a 70-200 lens. Smaller, lighter and much more packable.

that’s a great idea for Tamron 28-200, I really like their image stabilization, also their price point is hard to beat !
If something like this appeals to you, try the Tamron 18-200. I use the 18-200 on my Nikon D7000 most the time. Problem comes in at longer ranges. But for the most part it get's me by pretty well.
If I can only take one lens, it's a 24-70. If I can take two, add a 70-200mm. If you're hunting out of the truck, something super fast, like a 50mm prime 1.2f or 1.4f opens a lot of possibilities.
Tamron 18-200 cover's all these mm's in one small light lens. Or I think Nikon also does make an 18-200 lens but cost will go up. Just thinking, used to shoot pointing dog field trials with my D7000 and lens used the most was a 55-300. Carrying was the hard part. either hanging around your neck or slung over a shoulder. To fix the problem I got a chest strap for aa pair of binoculars. Had to remove the elastic straps and replaced with 1" nylon. strap went over my shoulder and around my back and camera hung at my waist. With the nylon straps no camera jumping around. Much more comfortable to carry around.
