Go Pro Camera Or Other?

I'm looking for a Go Pro Camera or other that some may have used & would recommend? I want to film a few elk encounters with the camera on my ball cap. Is there anything specific that I need that I have not considered? Thanks!

Ive been looking at the Gopro Session. Very small, waterproof unit without need of the extra case. One button control. Only thing i dont like is it does not have replaceable batteries, you have to charge the unit itself. And its $199 or less.

Go pros are great little units. I used the silver 3. Positives. Waterproof case, ease of use, great clarity, you can use for both photo and video, ability to recharge with cigarette lighter charger, many options to use on securing to your body, free editing software you upload to computer. Negatives. Limited sound acquisition due to the protective case, to film archery in particular weight of unit will require use of their headstrap, this is not bad just not great, not able to view clips in field with unit solely so would want extra memory cards with. Overall give the silver a 9.1 main issue is just sound acquisition while in case. Technology has come along since the 80s when trying to use a huge camcorder.

I think you'll like the session, it's only downside is internal battery and very high speed actions. An external battery charger will easily recharge it and in hunting you will not be doing any high speed stuff. It is a 1/3 or less of the size of the hero models and has no housing. For $199 or less it is a great little camera. I got a session from work and played around with it on my late season MT hunt. It has a small pole type mount that I used to mount it to my trekking pole.

there is a ball cap mount but I almost lost it using that clip, it was very secure mounted to my trekking pole.

The Session probably has the best audio quality of all the Gopro models. I run a skeletonized cover on my hero 2 which really improves sound quality. It does eliminate the waterproof aspect of the camera so if I'm going to use it in wet environments I have to remember to switch covers. Some small external mics are made if a guy really wanted good audio.

Paul, if your are not set on GoPro exclusively, I picked up a Garmin Virb last summer. Just the basic model was so cool I picked up the upgraded version (both gen 1 units, great prices). Been very happy with them. They have different zoom levels and capture things like speed and gforces. Strapped one to the strut of the float plane in Alaska and got some great takeoff flying and landing footage.

+1 on the Garmin virbs. Great little units and the 1st gen can be had for 98$ on amazon
