I would challenge any of you 15 to 18 x bino guys vs my spotter at long range! I bet I can spot an ear, tine, or white rump at long range that you won’t be able to find.

I also will challenge any of you to a long range judging competition! Tell a full curl vs 7/8 dall ram at 2 miles, how close would you have to be with your binos to tell 7 vs 8 rings on a dall ram. 76 vs 80” antelope, or 9 1/2 vs 9” billy with 5 1/2 vs 6” bases.

I’d take 8 or 10x binos plus spotter any day unless hunting brush country cows deer where a spotter also needs to be used to distinguish # and length of tines, spread, etc.

I like my DuoVids in 8+12x42 for this very reason. I can see pretty well up close and at distance. The only downfall is that they are heavy, but not as heavy as two pairs of binos.

You do understand that nobody's saying the 15s/18s don't replace a spotter, right?

It's so we can glass with both eyes open, all day, without the eye fatigue, gridding inside the glass, and with much less fiddling with the optic.

Yup, if there was no substantial downside to one eyed glassing you'd see dudes (myself included) running a monocular.

I have no problem glassing for weeks at a time behind a spotter and binos. Get out and get your eyes in shape!

I actually see the benefit of high power binos but for me, field judging is extremely important and the last thing I want to do is carry 8 or 10x binos, 15 x, plus a spotter, tripod, and other gear. I also do a lot of spot and stalk type hunting where I'm constantly glassing while standing. If you are limited to just large binos on a tripod this would be next to impossible. I can see 8x or 10x plus 15x if you aren't interested in field judging game but you would be at a huge disadvantage with just 15x.

I can see where 15x would be great for some situations, but for most cases hunting sheep, mtn goat, antelope, elk, muleys, and moose I've done well over the years with smaller binos plus a spotter. If field judging game isn't important 15x without a spotter would be great as long as you have a pair of 8x or 10x to spot game while still hunting.
