Glacier National Park in May

Isn't the normal expected date of opening more like mid-june?

I think Beartooth pass is a couple weeks earlier and that's the
friday of memorial Day weekend.

I was there last year for the first week of July, and there were still trails closed due to snow pack. I would definitely go back, can't say the same thing about Yellowstone.

This has probably been asked elsewhere but this was the most recent thread I could find so here goes….

I assume that those of you who have hiked GNP carry a handgun (and bear spray). Do you carry open or concealed and did you have any issues with park staff or others while carrying?

I’m taking the family in June. We have been to many other NPs in the wet but the first where we will be hiking in grizzly country so the handgun on me and spray for both my wife and I give me comfort.

What say you?

I have my CCW permit for what it’s worth and my state has reciprocity with MT.
I open carry a 10mm on the hip or chest, wife carries spray. I get some funny looks and assume I’d get arrested if I pulled the trigger, but live in MT and know how to navigate the backcountry. If a griz charges I’m protecting my kids.

Maybe I’m wrong, but I don’t anticipate carrying around popular areas in the park with lots of people around. However, if we go on extended hikes away from 95% of folks, I consider that’s the time to carry.

I have kids and would protect them against any type of life threat. It should be a no brainer for rational people.

FWIW, while a lot of Glacier may be inaccessible that time of year, if u drive south out of Missoula on 93, there are a bunch of great hikes into the bitterroots. It may not quite be Glacier, but there's not many people and it's beautiful country

Just wrapped up our Glacier NP trip and it was fantastic.

Three days at Lake McDonald Lodge were great. The weather was warm but mostly sunny. Going to the Sun was closed to cars but we E-Biked to Logan pass and enjoyed that experience. We rented a boat on the lake and saw the shoreline then hiked a few other trails to lakes and falls. Saw a few deer and a black bear (brown) but not much else other than the large population of ground squirrels around the lodge, which the kids loved watching. The food was good and cabin was nice.

Many Glacier was next level above Lake McDonald and a very special experience. We spent 2 nights and three full days making 100% use of our time. We hiked 16 miles the first day, including the Iceberg Lake trail and couldn’t have enjoyed it any more. The weather was incredible and we saw wildlife all over. We had 5 separate encounters with Grizz, with most being down hill but the closest was with a very large boar on the trail heading back, about 2 miles from the trail head. That bear was absolutely stunning to watch. His size and attitude was awesome to view. He was moving closer to us and we exited carefully but I will never forget that.

We hiked to Grinnell Lake the 2nd day and the views were amazing looking into the brilliant turquoise waters of the lakes below. We did not see bears that hike but had close encounters with two nice BH Rams then saw moose and goats too plus deer. Later that night while at dinner, a moose and calf walked along the lake edge, when all of a sudden, a grizz tore out into the lake after the calf. The moose got away but happening right in front of the lodge was epic.

We hit up a Paddlehead game in Missoula, RMEF, then a raft and fishing trip. All were great. By the way, Notorious P.I.G. BBQ in Missoula was excellent.

We very much enjoyed MT and will go back.
