As some if you've seen around the forum I'm making a trip to Alberta this September with a friend I've met via forums. I will Be after elk and mulie for 10'days.

Ll be staying at his place using his vehicles and everything. Ive done told him I'll be paying for fuel and groceries and even for use of electric. He won't hear to it told me if I didn't stop I wasn't coming lol

Now with that said I shut up. He says he is returning a favor from last November. But I feel indebted to him for his unreal kind of hunt and invitation.

So I'm trying to decide what I can do to surprise him and show appreciation with some kind of gift he can use hunting wise that will show appreciation that wouldn't be hard to cross the customs with into Canada. I've been thinking a Leica range finder or something of quality.

What's Yalls input. And thank you

My $0.02, go on the hunt with him and see what he needs/wants. Most guys will tell you without even realizing it. After the hunt, have it mailed to him. He'll be completely surprised and it's something he actually wants.

That is what I've done in the past.

It doesn't sound like money or things is something he's interested in or needs so anything that takes time and thought would be more appreciated than anything that takes money.

Take a bunch of pictures and when you get home put together a nice framed montage of the hunt and send it to him for Christmas.

Or make him something that you can see he could use or wants over the course of the hunt.

As for showing up with a gift, well that's why humans invented whisky!

Agree that you can ship something to him after the trip but show up with a huge prime rib, potatoes, dinner rolls and some great Cabernet. Horseradish too.

Haha hard to do that off the plane. Way this came about is he and 5 others went to kentucky Huntin last November. I sent country ham sack of taters eggs sour kraut canned beans sketti sauce apple sauce Apple butter 5lb hamburger pork sausage pork tenderloin and ribeyes for them. Think they are on it all week. And all of that was home raised and done by me. Can't get no not home grown than that

I agree with trying to figure out what he needs and then shipping it but if you want to be able to be there when he gets it, a custom knife would be awesome. Something handmade and unique

I asked him while Back if I needed a knife he said no worries he has plenty lol. I think I'll go with the idea of seeing what he needs then mail it. Would make it utilizable

If you did this for him when he came to your neck of the woods, you're being overly generous to try to give him something else. What'd he gift you after his trip? Nothing? Well, this is his time to shine for you.

I've got a friend who always is in give mode and never lets me do anything in return and frankly it gets annoying after a while. IF he didn't send/give you a similar gift last time, just chill out, enjoy his hospitality, and follow BroodBuster's advice and send him some nice photos.

Well it wasn't just him it was several other guys couple of the guys are members here too. Been awhile can't remember exactly how much I sent and thinkin I forgot the eggs as that's what 1 fella was looking forward too. Oops my bad. I wanted to make it but I couldn't cause of milking and dad not covering for me.

Wasn't just for him at all it was for the whole group. They are all just fantastic guys and ya can't ask for no better of people and I was glad to do it since I couldn't make it. The 1 fella extended the invitation unexpectedly and by no means did I intend it that way. The intial man them at set the whole gig up mailed my late grandmothers cake pan back to me with a very thoughtful letter and a cool hat from where they hunted. It's a trip that I wish I could have made.

I think your on the right track by getting him a gift of high quality, but even bringing up a good cut of beef is hard to beat. For the people who have gone out of there way for me, I gave one a loin of prime rib as a Christmas gift and the other I got a 65 quart yeti cooler. Both were really appreciative of the gifts

Other gifts I have given to special hunting buddies were Helinox 2lb chairs, Thermacells and Katadyne Hiker Pro and Lifestraw. They've always been well received.

Whether you show up with a high quality range finder--which he can enjoy or give away or sell, if he has another--or choose to send something he needs later, don't show up emptyhanded. Even a small, symbolic gift goes a long way.
