Do any of you guys/gals of recommendations for an inexpensive ghillie suit that can be pulled over other layers? There are a lot of options out there, and i know FL has an option, too. Any options or ideas that you guys have used?

Welcome.

Ghillie is an interesting topic. Love or hate them, they offer amazing camo capability.

The full blown sniper wanna be versions like tactical concealment, etc. are expensive, hot, heavy and snag on a lot of brush walking in the woods. The cheap knock offs that make you look like a wad of camo dryer lint are also hot and snaggy.

I still have a set of the cabelas leafy wear top and bottoms. Can get away with non camo colors under it for a quick hunt. I like them because they are mesh and fairly cool to wear even for spring turkey but I confess I don’t use them much. I bought tthe first lite version a few years and didn’t wear it a lot so I sold it. Definitely nicer than cabelas but it is only the top so if you are looking at full camo you need to pair it with pants.

Thats what I noticed, too, with the FL top. You think any sort of leafy mesh top and bottom would suffice? I would think so? maybe? haha

Sure. TBH I think you would be fine with camo pants. I wore mine with a pair of guide light pants in Fusion. The outline breakup is most needed in the head and torso for deer or turkey IMO.

Knowing what I know, I would probably buy the Cabela’s set for $80 instead of FL. FL is built better and will last longer but for me the extra $ isn’t worth it because I use the ghillie so little.

The FL Leafy Suit is awesome! I rarely use the bottoms, but the top get used a lot. It's super light weight, packable and breathable. Great for warm days when you really want short sleeves, but to remain in camo as it's goes easily over the top of a short sleeve shirt. Also a great option for kids when you don't have ideal camo and don't want to spend a fortune as it just goes over the top of decent baselayers etc ...

Way too uncomfortable to me. I can't stand any part of my clothing catching on branches. They can be tick magnets as well.

I too am looking for recommendations on a new ghillie jacket. Been running the Arctus Ghost Ghillie (its available on Amazon for around $100) in western KS and western NE for the past year, but am looking for something that blends better with the CRP in that part of the country. See attached pic. The Arctus is serviceable after trimming a bunch of material off my bow arm and I was able to shoot from a seated or kneeling position without issue. I do like its mesh liner that doesn't hold heat, as well as its integrated hood that does a reasonable job of breaking up my head outline without having to wear an additional head cover - I called deer and yotes to within a few yards and they never noticed me. What I don't like about it is that the yarn collects grass and twigs like CRAZY. When its not snagged on weeds or branches, its very quiet, but I constantly found myself checking that my arms were not going to contact anything in the event I needed to shift position and draw. Although it comes with pants and a separate hood, I found them to be surplus to requirements for sitting in tall grass. Also, it has too much green material for my liking in the western plains type country. Appreciate any suggestions from folks who regularly use a ghillie in CRP or warm season grass type settings.
