It seemed like a few years ago vortex razor was all the hype on the internet for good glass at a great price. By no means is it alpha glass but it always got great reviews. I haven't seen or heard much about vortex lately. Did the fad just fade or is there a better option at the price point? I have vortex razor gen 1 10x42 binos and I love them. They are not light or the best glass but I have had a fantastic experience using for them the last 11 years.

I believe vortex razor series is on to Gen 2 in their binos and spotting scopes. I'm considering upgrading binos or adding a spotter this year. Is there significant difference between the older Gen 1 and new Gen 2 performance, other than the weight aspect?

There’s a lot of better options at that price point people have figured out had more clarity than the Vortex. Some of us here have started using Athlon on our rifles. And nothing against the razor binos but for the new price on those you can also find used SLC’s for a few hundred more and won’t ever look thru a pair of Vortex binos again. But also every mans eyes see’s something different so for one the razor maybe the greatest for him and his budget. For others, if you can save a little more and buy Swarovski on the binos. Think the hype over the no questions warranty for life has faded though...

Razors are still great glass. Better than just about anything anyone will ever "need." But in their price point, there are a few that I personally consider better - the Conquest HD, Meopta Meostar and the Nikon HG. Having said that, I like the form factor of the new Razor. It's very compact and easy in the hands and the eyecups are great. If someone told me I'd have to settle for a pair of Vortex Razors from now on, I wouldn't be angry.

They are a noticeable step above mid-range optics like the Monarch 7 and the Viper HD, and I consider those my "minimum" standard these days. Or, the least I'd settle for. The only knock I have on Razors now is that they are made in China, and they don't gather light as well as others in their price range.

I have found when new models or gen 2's come out in anything there are always people that want the new. I have purchased rifle scopes, binos, rangefinders and spotters at very reasonable prices when this happens. I have a 1st generation razor spotter that I picked up for about 60% of new price. This is a great spotter! Watch the used ads and you can get some very good deals.

If it's anything like their riflescopes, there was a difference to me. That being said I believe it's up to each individual set of eyes, to determine how much.
