Gear list for a new hunter

It’s been said before but boots would be my number one recommendation. My first hunt went south pretty quickly with cheaper pair of boots. Try as many as possible and get a pair soon to start wearing around. I have used Blackovis base layers from camofire and been very pleased with quality for the money.

Also, I think figuring out a meal plan and the calories needed is a huge part. I struggled with diy meals and it got to the point that I could no longer handle the cous cous and tuna route.

I send these to new hunters all the time and even use them to ensure I have what I need when packing for a hunt. One of the biggest recommendations that I have is to not get hung up on having the "best of the best" gear. Merino baselayers, good boots, a good pack, good physical conditioning and PRACTICE shooting, solid shelter......the rest is just a bonus.

those lists are a good start even for seasonned hunter.

To add to the gear lists, Exo Mtn Gear has a free Google Sheets gear list that could be helpful. It is good for a general idea of what to carry but also great to save as your own and edit and update. I have used that from Day 1 when I started hunting as an inventory of gear as well as keeping notes for what does or does not work and being able to turn on/off different items for different types of hunts.

I’ll echo boots, but boots that work well for him. Just because they’re expensive and well made doesn’t mean they’ll be what he loves. When I first went down the boot rabbit hole I got Kenetreks because that seemed to be the gold standard. Wore them for a couple years and hated them. Since then I’ve settled on a boot that costs half as much and I’m way happier.
