I stacked up some rewards on an unmentionable website and they have some watches on sale through today. I have an Inreach mini, use OnX with my phone, and a 550+ with tt25.

I'd like to:
-track my heart rate loosely
-track my jogging distance
-track my dingo and see how far she ran
-read messages from the Inreach?
-use topo maps to get to a way point without pulling my phone out? (Very helpful when trying to find a trail cam or navigate in dark)

Models I'm interested in:
Forerunner 955 solar
Forerunner 965
Instinct 2 solar
Fenix E

AMOLED eats battery and washes out in direct sunlight. But gi es prettier images. I personally will not get one.

Touch screen is annoying, I have it turned off on my Fenix 7.

If price is an issue, you can do everything you want on a Fenix 7 at half the cost of a Fenix 8. Garmin is good about supporting old products for a long time.

I was thinking touch screen is cool.

On the dog track thing, does it put them on a map, tell you the dog's total distance, or just tell you distance direction like my 550+ receiver?

I use a Instinct 2 with a 550 Plus for my Setter, sync it with the 550 then put it away and use the watch.

Download Garmin explore app. tracks everything.

I don't have a dog. I imagine it can do whatever your receiver can, meaning you will likely need to upgrade to get that feature (if it is available).

The Fenix 7 has touch screen, my wife uses it on hers. But, for dumb kids like me, the touch screen can be disabled (hard to call anything with a smart watch "old" or some variation of that).

I have a fenix 6 that I bought for the dog tracking but have worn daily for 3 years. Bird hunting I use it paired with a 550 pro + (and occasionally an alpha 100 though I use the 550 95% of the time). It gives the arrow and distance which is generally all I want anyway. There is a 3rd party app that you can use to get a map when paired with the alpha though its not that native one and frankly I prefer the compass and distance anyway.

I also used it for triathlon training, all manner of fitness stuff, and navigating while hiking. The battery is still good for a solid 10 days with heavy use even after a few years.

When I need to throw on a suit for work I swap the band for a leather one and its good to go.

Well, now I farted around on the site long enough to think I want the Enduro.

Is the explore app on the watch or on my phone? Is it real time? My reason for wanting the dog track placed on a map would be A) then I can see how far she ran that day. B) more importantly, if she is out of sight and I get to her, I can understand what cover/ground she actually searched when I couldn't see her. I know the Alphas do this, but I didn't like all the buttons.

I used my Garmin 550 pro collar for tracking the dog, but the explore app syncs with the watch. I only use it after the run not on the phone. But you can run a track or trail.

OK, app is on my phone, and synchs with the watch. That's a different app than the inreach app, correct?

On the Expolre app, does it synch in real time with the watch via bluetooth? If so, I could feasibly pull my phone out mid bird walk and open the app to learn where the dingo has actually been, right then and there?

I’m not positive, I use ONX for that type of mapping. But it has GPS so I imagine it can be looked at in real time, I just don’t do it. I already have the collar the watch and onx.
