I have a need for a decent backcountry radio. These have always intrigued me but I have not heard good things on their performance or reliability. Anyone have any idea or knowledge on these? Which one to get etc? Thanks! I like the GPS feature and it will let me allow my teenage son to kind of wander I bit, or hope hope it would if we have two?

Been using a Rino for years. I have never had any issues with reception, durability, etc. The ability to see other Rino users' locations, send waypoints, etc. has come in very handy many times.

Now that I am using OnX more I use my Rino less. The Rino does not have good quality resolution in comparison to OnX, mostly because the screens on smartphones are way better (but also less durable). I use my Rino during general seasons where our hunting party splits up frequently but I also carry my phone for taking pictures, playing games and using OnX even though we are nowhere near private property.

If OnX allowed text via satellite I'd probably leave the Rino at home and save some weight. Until that time I will continue to carry it when hunting in a group.

Buy the best one you can afford, the rechargeable batteries are better than the AA packs if you have a way to charge them every couple of days.

I can’t speak to the newer models, but I bought a 650t in 2015 that had poor results with the texting feature. Another guy in our party had the same model. More often than not the text never went through, and the ones that did might show up hours after they were sent. GPS function worked well.

Thank you! Anybody got any idea as to how well the actual radio features work. Someone told me the range is very limited.

I have not experienced range issues here in Utah. We are typically within a mile or two of eachother though.
