I’ve been eyeing this watch for a little while. Time to start searching for a deal

I called Garmin this afternoon. The tech said the stair climb activity tries to combine accelerometer and pressure readings to define flights climbed, so apparently it cannot handle more than one set without getting confused, which seems about right since for the first 20 stories climbed it was somewhat accurate and went downhill from there...bizarre design. I'm going to try to use the stair stepper activity next time which should be strictly accelerometer based and see if that's any more useful.

As for heart rate, yes wrist based is less accurate but shouldn't be 50bpm off for 30+ minutes unless doing something like biking with a lot of vibration and weird wrist angles. For walking/jogging it shouldn't be that far off or there's no point having one at all. I'm going to try shaving the area under the sensor to make sure there's not hair interfering.
I imagine others have noticed this by now, not having read all of the posts, but I shaved the area on the top of my wrist directly under where the watch sits and the heart rate monitor improved immediately. I think it's true that the hair was interfering with the heart rate monitor getting a good read. Seems to have been pretty accurate since I did that.

One thing I don't understand is the Calorie counter. I just completed and saved an activity. During this activity it says I burned 343 calories. Then when I scroll down in the app and go to the dedicated calorie section, it shows a total calorie count, resting and active, The active is 248 calories. How could I burn 343 calories during an activity and then the calorie counter only count 248 active calories?

Clearly, this is not a big deal and I don't put a whole lot of accuracy on a watch keeping track of my calories, but its a tiny little feature I do look at to have small victories throughout the day.

This is something I have noticed with it too, and wondered the same thing.

Got one from RoadRunner Sport 3 weeks ago for $249 and love it. Tried and Apple watch for 6 months and it just didn't click with me. I was a Casio Gshock guy at heart and wanted a "rougher" smart watch that was more independent from the watch for it's ABC and had longer battery life. Getting around 2 weeks currently.

Bumping this backup up since these are now $200 for black Friday. Is there a better product out now at a compatible price point or should I just get the instinct and be happy?

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I'll see if Jordan will give us a summary after almost a full year of use. @Jordan Budd does the instinct still do everything you hoped it would? As a techy are you looking to upgrade with something new or going to run the Garmin another year?

May be a dumb question but can this watch link to health apps? We have some “healthy living” stuff going on at work and I want one that updates steps into our fitness tracker and such without having to manually enter the numbers.

It uses garmin connect, Garmin's health app, but can sync with other apps such as myfitnesspal. I don't use it that way so I can't say how seamless it is but I know it can be done.

I'll be using the Instinct for another year! At least unless they come out with another one that is similar but maybe a larger screen and some more features. I can't think of any other feature I would want in it though... especially at the price its offered.

Thanks Jordan just ordered one from S&S. From your excellent review article that's a ton of features for the $180 sale price. I'm pretty technology impaired so it should be interesting.
