In looking at the Garmin Inreach Messenger primarily because it’s made to work in partnership with my iPhone. From what I understand the messenger will:
-support SOS calls
-support email communications when cell service is unavailable
-support texting with other iPhone with the messenger app when cell service is unavailable

But if cell service is not available, does the messenger support texting to other iPhones that do not have the garmin messenger app installed?

I looked at an inreach too, but ended up going with ab Apple Watch Ultra instead. Since you already have an iPhone, I would look at an Apple Watch Ultra which performs basically the same function as an inreach now that it has satellite connectivity, while also getting the benefits of an Apple Watch (seamless integration with phone, fitness, health, etc.)

It’s my understanding tat the garmin has much better satellite connectivity under less than ideal conditions.

I have an iPhone (16) and a Messenger. It will support texting to other phones even without the Messenger app installed. The difference is that the text on the receiving end will not show your phone number, just a random number generated by Messenger and the receiver then has to 'reply' to the message, they can't text directly to your phone number. It does offer the SOS feature. To my knowledge, it does not offer email capability, but I could be wrong on that since I've never tried it. Depending on the version of iPhone, the phone alone can text if there is no cell service, but it's a bit cumbersome.

An inReach device does not send emails. You can send a message from your device to an email address but technically it’s not an email.

Yes you can message another phone (any phone, not just an iPhone) that does not have a Garmin app and they can respond. I pre-message contacts I want to communicate with while on a trip. They can store that number under your name if they wish to send you a message while you’re away. That number though isn’t permanent and Garmin will eventually delete it. You can also pre-send an email from your Connect Dashboard that will have an inReach contact link prior to a trip.

I don’t know what you mean by “SOS calls”. It will send an SOS to rescue services but it doesn’t make a “call”. You can message back to an SOS response once they respond to you.

Your messenger doesn’t care if there’s cell service or not. You can use it anytime anywhere unlike iOS satellite service.

I bought a messenger + last year so I could send texts and photos from my I-phone. It worked great in western WY. I had no problem communicating with friends/family.
