Guys,

I am planning my first solo DIY elk hunt this fall, now i am looking at buying maps, gps etc.

I have alway been a garmin fan going back to my offshore fishing and diving days.

i have identified these two programs

didnt what which is recomended ?

I don't have any experience with onXmaps but I do have and used Garmin Huntview before. I think onX maps might be VERY useful where boundaries aren't always 100% clear.

I use birdseye a lot of time on microsd cards that I've loaded.

I would need to do research but from what I've seen/read (not experience) if were hunting Montana I might go with onX maps for I believe they are better at identifying property ownership. I hunt CO so I've got the birdseye for the area I'm hunting and if plan A, B, C doesn't work I can throw in the huntview map chip.

For Garmin any 62 64 gps will work along with the touch screen ones. (just not a fan of the touch screen GPS's)

*edited* to bad this didn't come up a couple months earlier cabelas had the huntview map sd cards on sale for 49.99 I believe

If you're going the gps route, the Garmin product offers more provided you'll use the sat imagery. I've had the ability to add sat imagery to my garmin for years and find that I use it on my laptop for scouting but no longer use it on the gps. The states I hunt, it just isn't that useful. I use a montana gps and use the OnX chip and add some other overlays that I create on my laptop. For a state like Colorado, at high alpine elevations the Sat imagery may be a good deal.

I used the Garmin chip last year in CO and it was great. Showed property boundaries just fine. The Sat imagery was nice.

Onx is amazing I stuck my biggest bull to date due to that ap and we got a monster antelope last year also due to it I'd start there

Historically the Garmin map boundaries were not correct but maybe that has improved. The onxmaps are pretty accurate, I was never really impressed with the garmin maps but the hunt map is the delorme product I do believe so maybe it is better.

Also majority of F&G use onxmaps, so you know your maps will match theirs.
