Does anybody know of changes coming to DeLorem In Reach now that Garmin bought them out? I was at REI yesterday to look at unit and clerk suggested there might be changes, etc. GPS w/ sat communication.

That's exactly what I'm hoping for. I actually called Garmin on the subject and the woman on the phone said that the company hadn't told them of what was to come. She didn't say it wasn't coming though...

I have seen a the new product, but it was supposed to be out last year. Hoping to see it released in the next couple months. I'll be at ATA in a couple weeks, and will be talking to Garmin about it. Hopefully i can bring back some good news.. or ANY news!

I'm still not a fan of useing a constant use item that eats batteries, gps, and a life saving device in one. I like that my inreach is a communication tool only as it has great battery life. I also don't see how they can maintain current battery life of both and make a unit that weighs less then two separate units.

Guess we'll see if I change my mind if something comes out but I doubt I change up my current system.

I went 26 days on one charge using it for GPS spot reference for lat / long verification with daily text and progress reports to my wife and others. There is very little I would change functionality wise - Its a tool I depend on for work and recreation - Keep it simple Garmin!!!

There are almost no changes from last year's models. Almost exclusively packaging except the Delorme Topo Maps on the explorer.

Personally - I use my phone and a garmin watch for mapping, so only need the Inreach SE. From my perspective there would be no benefit at all from a newer version.

Here's the other thread going on this:

So question....why wouldn't someone want one of these other than price concerns if those are a concern???
As stated above battery life. My biggest issue with electronics in the backcountry is the batteries that go with them. If someone constantly uses a GPS all day they will use a set of batteries a day on most units. I usually set the truck and camp and leave the GPS off the rest of the time. My in reach I can leave on 4 days and send a few texts a day and the battery will last. I can get even more if I manually check messages.

Using both in one unit unless they changed how much it draws for power will make you have to change batteries on a daily basis. Unless you leave the unit off all the time. I had my inreach not turn back on after I turned it off on a hunt this year and the battery was over 90%. That made it a royal pain to get a hold of a packer we had lined up.
