Game cart

Thinking of getting a game cart what is a good one any ideas on options I should look for. I was thinking it would be nice to be able to hook it to my mnt bike but have not looked into that. I already have a cart I tow behind the bike.

I don't like most models and where I kill elk they don't make sense. If you had closed logging roads.. I might get one. If I was designing... .. bicycle size wheels and tires so it's easier to crawl over logs. Has to be two wheel so it's not tippy but narrow enough wheel base to fit between logs. The single wheel ones. You about have to have two people to keep from tipping over with heavy loads and rough terrain

The Hawk Crawler is pretty useful, we've used ours a good bit for boat based deer hunting. I'll typically quarter and pack but a few buddies like to gut and get the deer out whole. No chance I'd use it on any of our Elk hunts I've been on though, it'll be a liability in heavy elevation changes and such. It works well as designed though on flat-ish ground. I replaced the tires with solid rubber tires because the factory were always going flat after sitting, never went flat during use but didn't want to chance it. Downside is they take up a lot of room in a truck bed or on the boat, they fold but still a large footprint and heavy.

I bought one at Cablea's 20 years ago, 2 bicycle wheels which I equipped with their plastic covers to keep debris out. As stated earlier, on a trail or road it works very well. If the ground is loamy the cart will sink when loaded heavily. I've hauled out 4-5 elk and a bear on it. It is definitely handy when I am alone in the right situation.

I’ve packed out a couple deer and an elk with this. Handles about 1/2 an elk pretty well. Side hilling with the 1 wheel is easier than 2 wheel carts I’ve tried.

You need to add a lot more detail on where you want to use it. Too many versions and like boats they can't do it all.

My preference would be 2 in line wheels that are bicycle size with disc brakes. I don't use roads. And at time run solo.

I've used some game carts with mixed reviews. They were cheaper models.

Now, I use a medium sized beaver sled I purchased from amazon. Works great for deer sized game, but used it in Colorado to pack out my buddy's boned out elk (600 yard down-hill drag to the truck).

It floats so I use it duck hunting too. I put in my own eye bolts with washers and nuts and attached some caribiners to 1 inch Dyneema webbing for more length and comfort. I've hooked this up to our polaris ranger for dragging as well.

Use it at the beach for getting all of the associated crap for setting up for kids/family and works well on the sand. Keep it in my truck year round as it's easy to put essentials in and pull the sled out with the truck top.

I'm a fan as it is utilitarian!

What is the application? I have used several, have not found a great solution, so I pretty much quit using them… the other thing is, for deer, I used to always use them because I am mostly hunting walk in logging roads, so they can be useful, but I do a lot of hunting around the 5 mile mark from my rig, so I kill a buck at 9:30, gut it, walk all the way back, drag the cart in, load up the buck and get to my rig at 4pm and 22 miles later… now I kill, quarter and walk it out, walk half the distance and back 3hrs earlier

We have got 2 of my bear out whole on carts (one was roadless and a complete shitshow, lots of it was through swamp trying to drag it through the muck) because I wanted to keep them whole to skin in a good spot (both were big) but it sucked

Make sure whatever you buy has inflatable tires versus solid. When I was younger, my buddy and I used to go in a mile or better to bow hunt and we'd stash a 2 wheeled wheelbarrow before the season out there. That worked pretty good as we had to get them out whole to get them registered.

This is my Gen 3 decoy cart I use for duck hunting. The frame is primarily made of .095 1/2” square tubing. Handles are pinned in and are removed easily as are the wheels so it packs pretty well. It’s very lightweight but also very strong. I wouldn’t hesitate to put 250# in it. I’ve got a photo somewhere with a 350# black bear in the Gen 2 which has similar structural components. Not a complicated build if you have a chop saw and welder.

This is the one I have. It’s the hawk crawler. The wheels flip over logs and rocks very well. It’s pretty slick. My next project is going to be drilling holes through the center axle and using a pin system. This will allow me to remove the wheels and place them in the basket for transporting in the truck. It will take up less height and weight for moving it around.

I've used the Hawk Crawler in sage brush country and it works pretty good. Handles are big enough that 2 people can grab at same time and pull. The one thing I'd suggest is a mini-cargo net or other way to strap down/hold in what you are hauling.

These carts are probably too heavy to haul around with a non-electric MTB though...

I think this single wheel cart would be easier to get through the sage brush where I hunt.
