Gaiters…seriously don’t know

So what are the advantages of wearing gaiters? I live in Mississippi and I don’t think I’ve ever seen anybody wearing gaiters. What is the reasoning for wearing them?

Helps to keep your boots and lower pants dry; protects your pants from rips/tears; keeps twigs, sticks, pine needles, burrs, etc out of your boots and off your lower pants.

Keep your socks dry.

Lower pants will catch the water on brush and it’ll seep down into socks. Same with snow.

Plus they add some warmth in late season.

Also it’s an extra layer of waterproofness if you have to cross creeks and keeps snow out of your boots on late season hunts.

Snow is the primary reason (for me). When you have more than a few inches on the ground, gaiters are the solution to the post-holing that will 100% guarantee snow getting into the tops of your boots and letting your feet get wet.

They can also help with keeping ticks from moving up your legs.

If MS is like GA then most people are wearing rubber boots with their pants tucked in them. Gaiters have some of that same effect. They protect your pants from water and abrasion but also protect your laces from snags and just generally keep crap out of your boots.

I wear them to keep pants dry during archery elk. Wear them at other times to keep sticks, rocks, stickers and critters out of my boots and clothing. For snow during the winter. I have 3 pairs I rotate. Stone Glacier, T&K hunting, T&K hunting low. I prefer the T&K hunting gaiters. They are a bit heavier but the absolutely best I have found and used.

All the reasons above. I live out west and pretty much wear them anytime I'm hunting with tbe exception of stand or blind hunting.

Most hunters don’t use them unless snow is deep enough to get pants uncomfortably wet, then they are much more comfortable than having to wear a rain shell for calf height snow. Sometimes they keep mud off your pant legs, sometimes water from wet grass. The models made for summer use are usually not waterproof, may be barely as tall as the boot or normal height and keep dirt and rocks out of low top boots and from bugs crawling up legs. I’ve never worn gaiters in the summer in Wyoming, but there have been some times bushwhacking while wearing shorts it would have been nice.

I would say 95% of the hunters in Mississippi wear some sort of rubber/neoprene knee boot. That’s all I wear

In Montana I only wear them in heavy snow. Sometimes if heavy dew I’ll wear them but not often. One time antelope hunting a wore the little stretch gaiters to keep cheat grass out of my socks when I’m just wearing tennishoes, I keep them around just for early archery deer or antelope in the prarie

In Az, they help protect against rattlesnakes and cactus. I've worn them in AK to help with waterproofing, essentially trying to keep the water off of the tops if my boots.

Mostly it’s to imitate YouTubers who are sponsored by gaiter makers.

Yes there are times for them and I have some but they are one of the most overrated overused pieces of equipment one notch below rifle covers for your stainless synthetic rifle.

Been wearing gaiters since the 90s. I usually wear the same pair of pants all week when I hunt and just sleep in them half the time also. Gaiters will definitely keep the lower parts of my pants clean and extend their life in the field.

I don't wear them all the time during archery season but they are a must in my book the rain, snow or just to keep stuff out of your boots like others have said.

The most frequent scenario I use them in is when I'll be in tall grass/weeds etc and there has been a dew point overnight. Nothing will wet your boots out faster than wet grass/foliage.

I wear in the SOUTH, and West for snakes. In the desert SOUTHWEST, for Cacti, and in the mountains for snow and wet dew in meadows.

I wear mine to ensure that every single piece of hunting garb I’m wearing matches with either Sitka or Kuiu logos, in hopes of drawing the ire of every Daniel Boone Fudd that will inevitably lecture me on how I don’t need to spend so much $$ on Bougie-flage, and how he’s been killin’ the all biggest BOALs of 10 lifetimes with nothing more than some old Army surplus canvas coated dungarees, a second-hand faded and patched Carhartt jacket, some Mickey Mouse moon boots encrusted w/4 layers of duct tape and a sporterized Mosin-Nagant handed down by his grandpappy’s Grandpappy…..









…….but seriously tho., gaiters are a great piece of gear; keeps your boots and pant legs dry when wading calf-deep, keeps stickers and other crap outta ur boot laces, offers an extra layer of protection against pokey things, ticks, no-see-ums, and all of the other attributes offered up already above by those more responsible and much less sarcastic members than yours truly. . My real question is how do you guys find a pair that fits ? I have an odd calf side / leg length issue because they are either too tight on the calf or above the knee in height.. neither work and man would I love to use a set in the wet thick nasty bush I hunt moose in.
