Hey all wanting to improve my groups shooting and had an idea but figured I’d ask you pros on the finer deets. We’re easterners so we don’t do a lot of long shooting but out west it’s nice to feel comfortable at longer distances if you get in a pinch. Here’s what I’m proposing

We have access to a large field so multi targets at distances varying from say 100-500yd. I’d like to create a scoring system that rewards speed and accuracy. But I have no idea what sort of times to account for.

My initial thought was say hit in a 4” circle is -5 seconds and 8” is -8 seconds or something and a miss is +x but I have no clue what sort of times to account for. I don’t want some one to get smart and just miss really fast. But I want a time element to create some pressure like you feel in the woods.

Anyone done this?

Just realized I did my time subtractions wrong but you get the idea. Rewards for doing better penalties for poorly

Instead of quick shots, i'd worry more about shooting various ranges from non bench positions at non standard targets. You can simulate longer range by using a smaller target . A 4 inch target at 100 yards equals hitting a 16 inch target at 400. Have a target that is hidden by brush or other obstacle until you get to a certain point

Everything at 100 cuts down on wind effects and you still probably can’t simulate wind in western canyons
You have 500 yards available use it
+1 on various positions and ranges similar to PRS.
Burn powder have fun👍

If I were in your shoes I’d put a 20” gong at 300 yards since that’s what I zero at and another at 500 with a time limit of some kind and score by distance of each shot to the center. 20” is back to brisket of many mulies. A wind flag of some kind at each distance gets you in the habit of understanding how each shot is affected. Don’t like flags, hang a handful of grass, a dead porcupine, tree branch, or whatever from a pole. At distance the wind is usually the limiting factor. If you are practicing to shoot at long range there’s little benefit to shooting at short range other than time saved walking to the target. Most of the wind effects that hunters need to focus on are 300 yards and beyond. Someone will certainly say 300 yards is too far to get a good zero, but once that’s your normal starting place and you’re comfortable with what wind is doing at that range you won’t ever want to go back to a 100 yard range.

I like what LaPerla Ranch does with their challenges. I see no reason that wouldn't work well with shorter distances (just add whatever positional requirements you want).

How to add stress:
Time, movement, complexity(targets, orders, panning)

I’d look at some nrl hunter and PRS style stages, chopped down, with par time initially that make your group struggle to finish.

@Bluumoon ran a decent one :)

Make safety #1.

Run the course once and set a par time based on it. 2 points for 1st round and 1 point for second round hit.
