I need to ship two heavy 55 gallon drums from Idaho to Virginia. Total rookie on this. What are my best options?

I have never had to do this either but I looked it up and both FedEx and UPS both offer freight shipping.

FedEx and ups offer freight

fastenol is a maybe but I think their shipping options have reduced due to the virus. But you can check website

another option might be some of these taxidermy haulers

You used to be able to do that pretty easily through Fastenal, but the woo flu has changed everything.

I've always shipped with Peninsula for freight. Always got the best rates. For freight though you usually need a business account or else it will cost you way more.

I am shipping some taxidermy from Alaska via Delta Air cargo, super cheap. If it’s not hazardous that may be an option to look into. FedEx wanted $900 for a bear mount, air cargo was only $150 to nearest airport. Not sure about barrels but worth calling about. I heard about it from a guy that shipped a deer mount to Louisiana for $68.

Where to in VA?

I use Averit Express I have been happy with the service.

Ups freight is ok.

Most LTL carriers would get it there. I'm close to a hub for several freight companies. Probably harder to find a shipper in Idaho than VA

Secure to a plt and check with any national LTL carriers such as Old Dominion, FedEx Freight, or XPO.

Check with a couple LTL carriers such as ABF or Old Dominion. Both do household moves as well so you may not need a business account. Depending on where you are at you may need an interline carrier in ID. Costs could be cut by taking the drums to the freight terminal.

@Ryan Avery

I've had great success with Freight Quote, they will contact a bunch of shippers and get you the best rate.

Freight Quote

Ask them if best to put your drums on a pallet or two pallets. If one pallet, then strap both together and then strap down.
Best,
JL

Old Dominion would be a good one. They will strap it, wrap it in cardboard and bag it so there shouldn’t be any damage.

LTL is the way to go....XPO can help you out. May want to check the Haz status of what you are shipping since that will have an impact on rates.
