Free range alpacas...

Anyone else ever run across free ranging alpacas in Colorado? This is at 13,300’ in national forest.

wow. Never seen that. Lots of people using them as pack animals. I imagine he escaped. I did have a reindeer escape the corral and follow us on a backcountry ski loop of 5 miles once.
 
Were they with a flock of sheep? There are a lot of free range sheep herds mostly in northern colorado (north of the steamboat area) and dogs and occasionally alpacas are used to guard them.

There were 6. No bits or evidence of domestication.
