I have been an avid gun hunter for the last 20 years but have finally decided to get into bow hunting. My dad offered to give me his old Mathews Q2XL that probably hasn’t been shot in close to 10 years. He is 6’6” and I am 6’5” so there is a chance it may fit me. Seems to be in pretty good shape but definitely needs restrung.

My question is, should I take his bow and get it tuned up, restrung, and possibly switch the cam to fit me? Or should I just invest in a new bow? I hate to put money into it if I will just end up replacing it soon because it seems outdated. Just wanting opinions since I’m totally new to bow hunting.

My 2 cents for what it’s worth. You will probably need a couple hundred bucks to get it going or more if it needs a new cam. I have a q2 which is the shorter version. It shoots well and it plenty for a tree stand whitetail hunter but shooting past 40 they are lollipops.
If you know you will be serious into bow hunting and know you want to practice over 40-50 yards let alone shoot an animal at that range you may want to look into a new bow or atleast a newer one. But if you are not sure then maybe just fix what needs fixed and give it a try. It will still shoot well and smooth.

I fully support trying to get it done on a budget but so many guys seem to get a "free" bow and then dump a couple hundo into it. By the time they are all said and done they could have picked up a 2 or 3 year old flagship used bow here from 500ish with adjustable cams or mods system and gotten the newer tech and better adjustablity right out of the box. I fudged with my DL a couple times starting out. It would have been impossible to do with a bow that needed a cam swap everytime.
