If you purchase pelletized lime it reacts much faster, it is lost faster as well. If you need to improve pH a fair amount I normally recommend a pelletized lime and getting ag lime applied. Get fast and lasting results that way.

I've had completely opposite results. Pelletized lime has proven to take longer to get results versus pulverized lime. I only use pulverized now and it's cheaper and easier to deal with for me.

It depend on the grind of the lime how fast it will work, if you can get the Ag lime applied that is the best bang for the buck, pel lime is easier for some people to handle. Pel lime is instantly available but if your test are really low you will not see a response. On soil test as a general rule of thumb you try to get a ph around 6.2 to 6.4 your P or phosphorus around 45 lbs or 90 ppm and your K or potassium around 330 lbs or 660 per acre, if you got to your local farm store and look at fertilizer bags you see a number such as 12-12-12 the first number is nitrogen the second number is P and the third number is K. It take approximately 4 lbs of P to raise soil test 1 lbs and 7 lbs of k to raise soil test 1 lbs. depending on where the Ag lime comes from 1 ton will raise soil test .2, hope this helps everyone oh and if you end up putting to much nitrogen on the turnips will not put on bulbs

Try getting a mortar mixing paddle to run on a drill. You can stick it in a 5 gallon bucket. Mixes small batches really well.

That's interesting. I have seen the pelletized work way faster.


Either way right now is the time to be doing your lime and Ina few weeks here, frost seeding of your clovers.

Not alot of frost seeding around here. Lol. We plant our clover in September. It'll be about June before I can get in my plots. I put lime out in August or September.

Pelletized lime is very fine lime that is put into a pelletized form thus making it readily available to the crop, ag lime is ground or actually the The fines from crushing gravel it has multiple size stones so the powder is readily available now while the lager sizes take time to break down thus giving you a longer time frame of break down, hope that make sense

We plant clover in Sept as well. When it's getting drilled.

I'd think if your north Alabama you could still frost seed, but I'm definitely not very familiar with that area.

Any particular reason you lime late summer? Is that the most dormant time of the year for you with the heat or something?

We plant our Fall plots in September. I like putting it out around that time. This has worked well for us.
