Ok guys over the summer I recently discovered I was allergic to peanuts almonds and sesame seeds I found this out while in the mtns on a short 2 night pack trip. This constituted me breaking out in massive amount of hives and itching like crazy even had my lips swell up!!! ( I do have a picture but too embarrassed lol) so I went saw the allergist and that's how I found out.

The reason I'm posting this is to see if anyone knows where I could find some good snacks for backpacking the still can provide everything such as a cliff bar. High in proteins and carbs. Any suggestions would be great whether making it myself or purchasing it for future trips I'm still pretty darn new at the backpacking portion so I'm just looking for some ideas with my new found food allergy.

I'll still be continuing my research feel free to post up any ideas or suggestions thanks!!!!

My son has a corn allergy. As I look forward to future hunts I too wonder the same thing. It is amazing how many ingredients are in the stuff we eat... I am research making my own and experimenting with it at home to ensure he will eat it in the field. Its a lot of work.. At least for me as I don't enjoy time in the kitchen... : )

I will be keeping an eye on this as my son is allergic to nuts as well. Don't go in the field without at least 2 epi pens(if your allergist feels you need epi pens) and a bunch or Benadryl! Sorry to hear Cali, I know how frustrating it is to find food and how scary it is to be a ways away from the hospital when you goof up.

my wife has a list of allergies a mile long.

we get all of her food at whole foods, nugget, trader joe's and any other "natural" type stores. Sometimes costco, sams and wallyworld will carry stuff she can have as well. Basically it boils down to you going into a star and reading the ingredient lists...it is the only way to do it...she makes a lot of snacks herself, but we still find stuff she can eat that is pre-made.

Our brother in law is allergic to nuts, and he and Luke's sister (his wife) have gotten pretty serious about reading labels on anything he eats. For backpack trips, they eat a lot of dried fruits and dried coconut pieces, as well as jerky, string cheese, and cookies or bars they make ahead at home. Because he can eat peanuts, they do include peanut butter, but that won't be a safe option for you. Your best bet is likely going to be making some of your own stuff. I did a batch of homemade granola last year that included dried quinoa for crunch (it also included nuts, but they would be easy to omit). That thread is here:

...things like that might be an option, look for recipes that either don't call for nuts or where you can leave the nuts out.

I will second the recommendation to carry an epi pen or two, all the time but particularly when you are out in the field. Our BIL's nut allergy has gotten progressively worse with each exposure, so even if you didn't have an anaphylactic/airway response last time you could in the future. An epi pen could save your life!

Hey partner. Weird remedy but i am allergic to sunflower seeds after 20+ years of addicted to them. Snap of the fingers and i was going to hospital what a bummer!! But i will pop 2 sudafed pe and about twenty minutes the hives itchy hands and feet will diminish. I always keep some in my pack just in case! I feel your pain well kinda. I dont know what i would do without trailmix :) best of luck partner!

+1 on epipen! Very easy to get and minor details but it could aave your life until i come get you with 202 ;)

wow..it just came on?

crazy. trust me, never ever travel to thailand. they have peanuts on everything. curious how they dont have peanut allergies. sucks this is the real mutation..and not knives that come out of our hands. "snickt!"

Ya it's pretty scary now I read every single label and like restaurants and things I'm very cautious with and after my episode I have epipens that I carry with me now everywhere I go.

Thanks for the pointer Becca I'm just going to have to start experimenting and see what works it's also crazy too see fellow roksliders dealing with similar situations.

By the way CaseyU your an engine guy now not a rotor head you'll have to drive over here lol
