Anybody put a closed cell foam pad under their inflatable to make sure it doesn't get punctured ? Worth the extra weight and bulk ? Thoughts ?

Doesn’t seem necessary to me. It just takes a few seconds to clear the spot under your tent or the ground where you’re going to put your pad. Frankly, most foam pads only weigh a couple of ounces less than a regular air pad. Might as well carry an extra sleeping pad and not deal with the bulk volume of the closed cell pad. Then you have a full backup. Just bring a patch kit for your pad and you should be good.

I will often carry a roughly half length ridge a rest that I use for glassing, naps, and use it under my inflatable pad. I look at it more as a insurance, if my inflatable goes flat I am not fixing it in the middle of the night. I am also in the south west where there are lots of pokey things.

I do. Use it to glass on, and increase the r value of my sleep system. Sit on half, and use the other half as a back rest against a boulder helps me stay put longer.

I do Quite often. Had a pad get torn in Montana a few years back and it was a cold few nights until I got back to the car. I mix and match Between a couple of options.

- full length ridge rest in wide when weight and bulk aren’t an issue.
- zrest is great. more narrow and light but better as a camp seat and glassing pad.
- seek outside makes something call Matty mcmatface it is thin but also doubles as a ground cloth so plays two rolls for 8oz. It protect my pad and is great as a sitting pad. I own a full width version and one I cut to 25 inches that weighs under 5 oz. they can get Oren up with hard use but a little duct tape fixes that.

Good source for buying your own foam: (Edit: I think this is a good source and plan to order from them when I again need some foam. At this time however I have not ordered from them.)

That's the opposite way of the most effective use of the foam pad. Defeats how most inflatable pads work by heating air in the pad and reflecting the heat back to you. The foam on top blocks that from happening and does nothing to help protect against punctures. Running it under the air pad gives better pad protection and helps insulate the air pad from the ground making the air pad much more efficient.

punctures aint what i am worried about. i sleep cold and need the insulation. insulation between me and the air pad is important for warmth. i even frequently use a thermarest selfinflatable over the air pad. much warmer. insulating the pad from the ground is one thing but what about the sides?
i have slept on ice and snow and know what works for me.
