Is it worth it to run a foam pad under an air pad for puncture protection? The added boost in R value is nice but not the reason I’m considering bringing it. The one I have is just big af

I have to use foam under air, in order so I can deflate the air mattress enough, while not sleeping on bare ground on my hips and shoulders. For me its VERY worth it, but different reason. I am sure there are plenty of thorns that will go right thru both, but it cant hurt.

I love my zlite for a sit pad/kneel pad/backup sleeping pad/ extra padding. I only use 6 panels though.

IMO unless it’s extremely thorny where you are, decent site selection and clearing the area for your pad are probably all you need. But as a multi use item I like the z-lite.

I would also say it depends on how hot you sleep. I sleep very hot and the one time I did slept with a foam under my pad, I was super sweaty all night. And this was in late October.

Having spent a grand total of 0 nights outside of the truck at that elevation, I have no clue...That goes with most things though so its nothing new

Worst case is, you bring it, it's too hot, you can use it as a sitting pad for glassing. I always take one just for that purpose.

Gossamer Gear or one like it from many vendors out there if puncture protection at a lighter weight and more compact is what you're after.

Almost always. Zlite piece has a lot of uses besides pad protection.

Good backup for the time you inevitably pop your pad. I had a seam delaminate on a BA pad and froze my ass off. Was trying to go too light and left the foam at home. Depending on the trip I see it as a necessity.

My bags comfort rating is 27, pad is a 4.1. May toss in a liner just in case. Thinking temps should be in the 30s at night. The extra insulation may not be bad even if I get a smaller lighter one.

I use a closed cell foam pad and fold it up if I need to sit. It's a nice peace of mind from punctures since I use a Nemo Tensor which is pretty known for that stuff. I sleep like a baby.

Here's my set up. Cheap Walmart foam pad, I cut it at 4 folds so I have one long and one shorter. The shorter one folds to the width of my backpack and doubles as a but pad when glassing. In the evening I throw it under my air pad with the long section to make it act like a pad again. Gives you a boost in the r rating and also prevents any punctures in addition to to more padding. Works great for me with my xtherm.

I go back and forth on this. I’ve popped two pads without running a foam pad underneath. The first time I didn’t have patches so I spent the next 4 nights sleeping on the ground- not fun. If you aren’t going to run a foam pad underneath you really need to do a thorough sweep for pokies. Carrying the full length foam pad is probably worth the weight penalty and bulk, plus it can obviously double as a sitting pad.

Cut it in half and it’ll still be really usuable. You can still use it as a sit pad and under your upper portion of your body under your air mat. It’s also easier to store in your pack. I like to put mine on my load shelf between my pack and frame.
