I have a new FNX 45 Tactical on the way and I want to get a red dot for it. Quality and durability are my top concerns. I will be carrying the gun as a hunting sidearm predominately. I will also be using it at night with a weapon light. I definitely want my iron sights as a backup.

Which red dot would you choose and with what dot size? (Iron sights is not an acceptable answer :D)

The top two I'm currently considering are the Type 2 RMR Adjustable LED and the Leupold Deltapoint.

What is the best way (or even the options) for setting the dot up? This will be my first pistol with a dot and I'm not sure how people usually set them up to cowitness.

Thanks!

More than half a million rounds with red dot equipped pistols...

The only two dots currently available for use as anything other than a range toy, is the Trijicon RMR Type II and the Leupold Delta Point Pro.

Highly suggest battery powered adjustable and smallest dot, not triangle, you can get.

Would you go with a 1 MOA dot over the 3.5 MOA dot in the RMR? Not having looked at many of them, I'm a little worried about being able to find a dot that small quickly in a defensive situation.

If you have a means of looking them over before buying, or returning easily, Shield sights are worth a look, too.

If you haven't, look through them and each with each reticle. Turn the reticle as high as it will go and look at it in full, bright light. Do the opposite. Pick whichever looks best. It'll probably be the Leupold with the delta dot.

Yes. It’s a common misconception popularized by writers and “defense” people that a bigger dot is easier to find. It’s not. You either can see the dot in the window or you can’t. Also, when you turn up the brightness to actually be able to see it in daylight, the dot blooms. A 2 MOA dot is easily a true 6 MOA glowing ball when turned up.

I’m still using a 3.25 MOA RM06 as it hasn’t crashed yet. Most I work with have moved 1 MOA RMR’s, 2.5 MOA Delta Point Pro’s, or 2 MOA Aimpoint Micros. The 3.25 MOA dot is as big as I would go.
