First post here. I have used rokslide for the last few years to prepare for western big game hunts last 5 years.

Hailing from Florida but yet to earn the title of Florida man.

Headed to Nunivak Island in August for Musk Ox, will be looking for any info, tips for the hunt as I have never been to alaska before

Thanks for everything and Thanks for the great forum

Wow that’s a big logistical hunt for your first one. Should be successful though once you figure it all out.

Rifle hunting for musk ox is not difficult once you find a mature bull (you really need to learn how to identify one). If you bowhunt then musk ox are a perfect quarry!

My hunt started Sept 1. I did not run into any mosquitos and wore regular boots but I concentrated on the part of the island that had a few hills.

Bring LOTS of patience as travel is intense and the speed of life on the island is pretty darn slow.

I tried to document my hunt here:

Best September Ever…

I read your story, great article! I have a few specific questions if you are willing to answer.

What maps did you use?

Did you use an ATV during your hunt?

Thanks

I’m almost certain that was pre OnX for me; almost always I ordered a MyTopo map.

No 4 wheelers, my transporter dropped me via boat out in the ocean and I hiked.

As the self-appointed chairman of the welcoming committee, it is my privilege to extend a laurel, and hearty handshake (virtual, of course) to our new ( ) FL member.

Sounds like the REAL work starts after one pulls the trigger!
If one hunts something on an island, isn`t one pretty much guaranteed success? Just wondering, never hunted anything confined to an island before.
