Hello all.

New guy from Oklahoma. Rifle hunt whitetail in Oklahoma. A buddy invited me on my first elk hunt in Colorado end of Oct.

If you have “must have” or “must do” for a newb, let em fly!

Thank you!

As the self-appointed chairman of the welcoming committee, it is my privilege to extend a laurel, and hearty handshake (virtual, of course) to our new OK member.

The number one "must do" I would say for elk hunting in CO is to be in shape. Elk can travel many miles and many feet of elevation in a very short period of time, and you don't want to miss out on one because you can't get to where they are. Hit the stairmaster or inclined treadmill (with a weighted pack if you are able) and invest in a good set of boots, it'll be worth it.
I would also recommend a good layering system, as the weather in Colorado, especially in the mountains, tends to fluctuate quite a lot, and you have to be prepared for it all. I've had many hunts start in the single digits where it felt as though I couldn't throw enough layers on, but as the sun rose and temps heated up, I couldn't shed enough layers. Good gloves, a good base layer, and a good system will save you on the coldest of mornings that turn hot real quick!
It's funny, you are from OK going to hunt elk in CO, and I am from CO, moved to OK, and now trying to hunt whitetails lol! Good luck, elk hunting is one of the best adventures out there!

Thanks for the tips!

That is funny! Thanks for the luck! I’m looking forward to it. I have friend that has been and recommended it several years ago and the opportunity arose this year. I’m excited and nervous haha
