Flying with my backpack

Hey guys I’m going on a flight in the morning and was thinking of using my Kifaru Reckoning as my bag to check. Seems like it would be easy to throw it on and walk through the airport with it. Have any of y’all done this or do you think it’s a bad idea? It’s going to have mostly some clothes and basic camping gear inside it. I know the airlines are tough on stuff.

If you don’t have a backpack cover bag (a number of hiking/expedition gear companies make them) I recommend double bagging it with contractor bags. They are easy to put on and tear off, and provide decent protection for the routine abuse that checked airline luggage is subjected to.

Lost count of the packs I have used as a carry on. Next week with be a 14R, couple weeks after that it will be a pintler. If it fits in the bin its a go for me.

when i flew with my pack, i had a large duffel bag that i put it in before checking. this way all the straps were contained and no risk of them getting caught on anything. i had friends that just checked their pack as is. some wrapped with plastic film. all packs survived the trip.

Just made our New Mexico trip. Flew with my MR Sawtooth and my sons popup. I bought a large duffle from Amazon (Amazon Basics) and put both semi loaded packs in it and checked it. Weighed about 50 lbs. Worked great, no problems !

Thanks guys. I think I’ll see if I can find me a big duffle. I’ve got an OR 55liter dry bag but I’m sure I can’t make that work.

I was planning on asking around about the pintler as a carry on. Doing a Africa trip next spring. Never been an a plane for more than 2 hours before. Dont understand sizing for Carry ons
