Flying with handgun ?

I’ve flown with my pistola a few times but always with my rifle or bow in a large case and I know those TSA rules pretty well.
Now I want to fly with only said pistol in a small pelican case. Can I put the pocket rocket in the TSA approved locked pelican and that in a larger checked duffel bag to save on checked bag fees ?
