I have a Cabela's Stowaway 7 rod in 3wt, and all I use it for is pack in trips. For those pack in spots I generally only use pretty small stuff so the 3wt is perfect. For rivers and larger lakes I'll use my 9' 5wt and 6wt rods, and sometimes my 8wt in big enough water for large flies.

Do you think it's the difference in rod action that makes the Cabela's less friendly to you?

I suspect that's what it is. I bought the Grays GR-30 because I was told it was a very forgiving rod especially for the money ($130 if you can find one). I am slowly getting better but I don't get out nearly enough for it to be a quick journey. As I said, I'm sure someone more skilled than me would find it adequate. I just end up with so many knots in my leader it's not funny when I try to use it.

I was just curious. Your experience is interesting. Sounds like a great idea for a newer fly fisher

Thanks for all the thoughts so far. I picked up a Redington Rise 3/4 reel today for about $100 off. Couldn't pass up the deal, now I just need to sift through the thread and look at my rod options.

I ended up with a TFO Finesse 3wt 8' 9" rod. I went to a local fly shop and played around with a ton of rods. It was a really windy day and I couldn't get the 7 footers to cast where I wanted them to. Of all the rods I touched, this one felt the most natural in my hand and was the easiest to cast.

Now I need to start looking for a lighter rod tube.

same rod I use, as far as the rod tube you can make your own easy enough but I don't use one unless I'm flying.

How do you carry it on your pack? Just in the rod sock on the side of your pack or in it?

I use a dowel rod and twist ties or rubber bands making sure the tip is not sticking past the end and secure the sections to it. TFO rods don't come with a tube. I just bought a Mystery Ranch Glaicer and it has options on the outside Ill try to post a picture if I can figure out how..
I also leave it strung with my fly hooked to the end guide
